Sushi Kappo Umemoto — Restaurant in Hitachinaka

A great little family owned and operated restaurant. They only serve sashimi and tempura now, but it is very good. Owners were great, as we came in later, after 9 pm, and they welcomed us and did not rush us at all. We did not leave until about 11 pm. The sashimi set was very delicious, it contained shrimp (ebi), squid (ika), tuna (maguro) which was very fresh and cut generously. The tempura was great, so light and crunchy and the all the vegetables were all very fresh. I love small little restaurants where the owners take the time to tell you their story about how they made a life in the food business. They were so hospitable and outgoing to make sure we liked everything and explained how they prepare everything. There were a few regular locals there and they were all so friendly and nice. 10年以上前から知っていたが、なかなか入る機会に恵まれず…とある日曜日の夜、ふらっと訪問しました。

日曜日だし、店舗前の駐車場にはいつも停まっている車しかないので店内は客なんかいないと高を括って入店すると、カウンターには常連さんとおぼしき客が4名。ちょっと驚きました。

小上がりに案内され、生ビールを注文。女将さんからは、食事か飲むのか聞かれます。というのもご飯を炊いてないらしく、食事であれば炊飯するとのことでした。

メニューはカウンターに置かれた手書きのものと卓上にあるものだけらしく、品数を絞って営業しているようです。

つまみに刺身盛り合わせ2人前ときすの天婦羅、有頭海老塩焼きを注文。まもなく刺身盛り合わせが配膳されましたが、天婦羅はやや時間をおいてから、海老の塩焼きはなかなか出てこず、少し心配になりましたが、杞憂に終わりました。

家族経営？なのか、アットホームな雰囲気です。...
