Food and service maybe 3.5 stars. Ambiance, 6 stars!!! The chicken on a stick was very soft. It's best eaten with rice. The humongous rice ball has 3 fillings: simmered konbu kelp, pickled plum, and salmon. It can easily feed two or 3 people. I'd say it's 3 bowls of rice, easily. The takamori beef was unique, apparently the cows are fed sake lees. I would recommend that you don't undercook it as it's a bit too chewy so, cook it well. I didn't like the dipping sauce. A little sweet sauce not unlike noodle dipping sauce. I'd have just preferred some salt to enjoy the natural sweetness of the meat. The place is like a mini village, equipped with a shrine where you can get a lucky fortune paper and even play ring toss, next to it. Theme park slash BBQ venue slash outdoor Izakaya. It is a bit touristy but most people come for the ambiance. The price isn't high for a tourist spot. It's neither cheap nor expensive. There are plenty of local souvenirs sold around the entrance area. The line is very long. There's more than one line, for different parts if the place so it's possible to wait for less time. Most people just line up at the main line, for maybe an hour or so? The place is known to foreign locals as "Chicken Shack."

Locally known as the “Chicken Shack” to the expats in the area, this location of the “mountain pirate” chain of restaurant / experiences (there are three total Sanzoku locations) is perched on the hillside. Beautiful location, beautiful views, and amazing food. The “chicken on a stick” is their staple dish, but you’ll find the onigiri, edamame, and pork cutlet (to name a few) are additionally excellent choices. This place only accepts cash, and I don’t believe they have an ATM so come prepared. Parking isn’t too bad! If the immediate area is full they have overfill parking about 750 meters up the hill. Lastly, this place is PACKED on Japanese holidays. Wait times can be upwards of two hours on those occasions.

This restaurant is absolutely beautiful! The setting is nothing short than magical. Nestled in the forest, lit by lanterns and the sound of running water. Perfection! Our Japanese isnt great so we ordered pretty blind and got way too much food. The rice balls are massive! We got four and only had two between four people they were so big. The chicken was great and had a good flavor, the udon was so good although only two out of our party of four liked it. I think thats a them issue rather than anything being wrong with the udon lol It was on the pricey side but I think it’s because we over ordered. Such a great experience and would be so nice to bring guests to!

Great place for dinner with friends. Menu options are plentiful and we enjoyed every item we ordered. The chicken is a must, but you really won’t go wrong with anything you order. Reservations are possible, but must be made at least 3 days ahead. The traditional seating can be quite uncomfortable; you can reserve the seating where your legs hang into the floor, which is helpful for those of us that aren’t quite accustomed to kneeling. Definitely check this place out. The property grounds are beautiful and it’s a unique experience. In the winter, the tables are heated. Really fun place.

Love going here for the food and the atmosphere! I love their gyoza! Whenever I have someone visiting, i make sure this is one of our stops. It’s a must visit when in Iwakuni. Kind of hard to get here without a car, but not impossible. There is a very small train station in Kuga, but it’s quite a walk to Sanzoku. Maybe worth taking a cab if there are some at the station. If you drive, they do have quite a bit of parking available. It can get very busy so go early, or be prepared to wait. Also be sure to walk around the whole area. It’s beautiful during cherry blossoms and in the fall.

I first came here when I moved to Iwakuni in early 1980s. I've come back many times to Iwakuni in the following decades and have made it a point to go to Sanzoku. It never fails. You must try the Sanzoku yaki (chicken), the meat plater barbecue and finish off with zenzai (sweet beans and mochi). One zenzai order serves two persons. I find it best to eat on the side of the road where the taiko (drums) are. Plan to spend time looking around the property on both sides of the road. They don't take credit cards. But the prices aren't that high.
