R55: A Hidden Gem at the Southernmost Tip of Tokushima: A Journey Through Flavor and History
Nestled quietly in a serene town at the southernmost tip of Tokushima, where the sea breeze gently caresses the landscape, lies a quaint café known as "R55." This place is not just any ordinary café. It is a treasured gem that has been nourishing the hearts and stomachs of its visitors for nearly 40 years. The charm of R55 lies not only in its exterior and interior but also in the love and history infused into every cup of coffee, every slice of cake, and every plate of pasta.
The first time I visited this café was when I was still young. As I opened the door, the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the soft sound of a record playing enveloped me, as if I had traveled back in time. From that moment on, R55 became a special place for me, and I found myself returning time and time again.
One day, as I visited R55 as usual, I came across a menu item that made my heart flutter with excitement: "Hikousen Spaghetti." The name itself evoked a sense of nostalgia, and I ordered it without hesitation. When the pasta was brought to my table, I couldn’t help but smile at the generous portion, reminding me of the days when I had an insatiable appetite in my youth. However, now that time has passed, finishing such a large serving has become a bit of a challenge, making me acutely aware of the passage of time.
Before the pasta, a simple yet refreshing salad and warm bread were served. Each bite of the crisp salad brought a satisfying crunch, and the subtle aroma of butter from the bread filled the air. These were presented at the perfect timing, heightening my anticipation for the main dish.
Then came the "Hikousen Spaghetti." Its flavor was rich and reminiscent of the "Carbonara" I had ordered on a previous visit, but with a stronger hint of pork. While I thoroughly enjoyed the robust flavor, I would recommend that those who aren’t fond of pork opt for a different dish. As expected, my partner, who isn’t a fan of pork, passed a few slices my way, and I gratefully accepted each one, further deepening my satisfaction.
It has become a tradition to enjoy the house-roasted coffee after a meal at R55. The coffee, brewed from freshly roasted beans, is rich in aroma and depth of flavor, making it feel more appropriate to refer to it as "珈琲" rather than simply "coffee." This cup of coffee, as always, left a comforting aftertaste that lingered pleasantly.
And, of course, no coffee experience is complete without cake. As a sweet tooth, I often find myself torn between different cake options. On this day, I was particularly tempted by the rare cheesecake and the pumpkin cake, but unfortunately, both were sold out. However, the chocolate cake I selected from the case next to the register did not disappoint. The moment the rich chocolate flavor melted in my mouth, I knew I had made the right choice.
R55 is more than just a place to enjoy a meal. It is a warm and inviting space where each visit brings new discoveries and joys. Every dish on the menu reflects the owner’s passion and dedication, and each plate and cup becomes a part of our lives. Next time, I’m determined to try the "Arrabbiata," which I haven’t had the chance to savor yet.
Spending time at the R55 café feels like a gentle, slow flow of time, offering a sense of peace and relaxation. The flavorful dishes served here allow one to forget the hustle and bustle of daily life and refresh both the mind and body. I look forward to many more visits, eager to discover new flavors and experiences in this beloved place.

Read moreA lovely spot with amazing food. Definitely THE place for a meal. Great service from friendly staff. The menu is unique (e.g. the dry curry is completely different to anything else I have tried in Japan and completely amazing; the seafood "marinara" in Japanese style is also great) as well as having great standard traditional items (e.g. one of the best miso soups with fantastic seafood). They have definitely taken advantage of the seaside location. For USD10 you will leave completely stuffed to the gills - bit more pricey than some other places but still great value for money. And if that ain't enough to get you here - the decor will inspire, the games will entertain the kids, and...
