Fantastic cottage. Highly enjoyable meals.||We arrived at Fratello di Mikuni after a long drive from Utoro. The sight of the 4 modern villas and a large modern building high up on a hill brought a huge smile on our faces. ||Check in was quick and easy at the large modern flat building. This is the restaurant Fratello do Mikuni. It faces the dramatic Daisetsuzan mountains. We were given the keys to the third villa from the road, and a Japanese mobile phone to speed-dial the restaurant or the duty manager (at night after work hours).||Key in hand, we parked outside the villa, unloaded our bags and went in. The villa looks small on the outside, but inside is a different matter. There’s a large living, dining and open kitchen, three beds separated by mosquito nets along the back wall, a double sink area with toiletries and amenities, and a good sized walk in shower, large bath tub and towel area. An enclosed toilet also helps to separate out the smells. A cosy master bedroom with Japanese rice paper screen doors for privacy.||The outside looks modern with its use of metal roof and on the side walls, but any livable space inside is lined with a wooden wall or wood slats. Even the outside picnic table has a modern yet Swedish feel to it.||Inside the villa, large tiles line the floors, and the cottage is a picture of open concept living. The slide panels, vertical blinds and mosquito nets help to separate out the areas for some privacy.||Some amenities are included in the cottage bathroom sinks, including hairdryer, cotton buds, toothbrush and shaving kit. Large bottles of bathing foam, shampoo and conditioner can be found in the walk-in rain shower. The same gel is used as soap at the bathroom sink. The cottage is stocked with large soft bath towels, and terry cloth bath robes. ||The toilet is in its own cubicle, and has a modern Japanese toilet which senses your presence, opens the lid and lights up.||Pajamas are laid out on the bed. They are a modern cut with the pants at 3/4 length, and the top being grandpa collared.||The Bathroom, toilet and shower area were all quality-finished. One could not ask for more from a villa in the middle of nowhere.||There’s a Flat screen tv as well, but we did not have time for it. In these parts, we suspect that it’s only local TV stations. An electronic safe is provided in the master bedroom closet.||The kitchen area comes ready to host a meal. Plates, wine glasses and cutlery are included. ||My son was unhappy with the weak WiFi in the room. There is no WiFi in the restaurant.||Our dinner and breakfast was in the restaurant. Dinner was a multi-course meal that was subtle and yet delicious. Breakfast was wholesome, delicious and just right. More on that in a restaurant review.||The cottages are a stones throw from Daisetsu Mori No Garden. This is a beautifully laid out garden with much flowering blooms and themed area around a rolling landscape. ||We had a really good one night stay here. Would have been good if it were longer. Sleep was deep and uninterrupted. We loved the villa and if ever we were to build one, this would...

Read moreThe villa’s exist to facilitate slow paced fine dining experiences in the restaurant. Located several miles south of Kamikawa in the foothills. Service was both professional and friendly. Our multi -course French style dinner sourced on local ingredients was superb. The savory breakfast crepe weeks later still generates feelings of immense gastronomical satisfaction. The small intimate restaurant with an open kitchen sits atop a hill, at the same time it’s expansive windows provide a feeling of being a part of the majestic surrounding mountains and nature. The restaurant is far from any municipalities. To save diners a post-dinner perilous drive through the mountains in the dark, the villas down below the restaurant provide shelter for the night. We opted for a room in a shared villa with 2 other rooms. Small, but modern and well designed to provide all the needed comforts between dinner and breakfast. A real treat, highly...
