My family returned to Nakafurano after 14years. In additional to Farm Tomita we really wanted to try the signature Softcream “Santa Hige” which in Japanese it literally mean “SantaClause’s beard”, in which the Softcream is resembling Santa Clause long beard. Popura Farm been using this brand for decades. 10-15min drive from Farm Tomita, the Popura Melon Softcream outlet has obviously gone through significant changes and upgrade. On the same location but the outlet has multiply its side more than 2X, tastefully decorated. What has not changed is the full ripe (Japanese called it kanjuku) furano melon. The Softcream was made by Hokkaido milk, and the sweetness of the Softcream could not overshadow the full ripe Furano melon, hence you could imagine how sweet and fragrance was the melon. You could see that we scope the melon flesh right to the fringe of the inner skin of the fruit. You could only achieve this when the fruit is “Kanjuku” full ripe. In addition, we also savor the sweet corn… heaven !!! My advice for those who on self drive, keep your stomach & wallet at Popura Farm Furano, it has much better CPI compared to the lavender farm which jam packed with tourists. My last photo shown here was actually an archive photo taken at Popura Farm 14yrs ago, it was an era where you still see Fax machines as communication tool. Ah… lots of nostalgic feel. Glad to savor the Furano Melon after 14yr in...
Read moreThis souvenir shop & cafe operates along the national highway in Nakafurano Town. They serve a sweet called "Santa's Beard" here, which is a melon topped with soft-serve ice cream. There are many signs along the road, so it has an impact. The name of this product is probably more noticeable than the name of the store. The name of the shop is so named because the soft-serve ice cream on top of the sliced melon looks like Santa Claus' beard.
I visited the store before going to the hot spring next door, because I noticed the impact of the store. However, I am not a big fan of melons, and I had just received a large amount of melons from a friend, so I decided to get a drink this time.
This time I ordered a drink called "Blue Pond Cider. Aoi Ike is a famous sightseeing spot in Biei-cho, the next town over from here. The drink is carbonated, so I heard that you have to slowly turn it upside down and mix it evenly before drinking. The taste is more refreshing than it looks. The container has a strange shape, but how do they put the lemon in it?
It was a moderately interesting store. If you like melon and soft-serve ice cream, you should definitely try it at least once. The price is high, probably due to the touristy price,...
Read moreI tried the melon from T**a farm where the price is way higher (3200yen) and you have to add on for ice cream(450 yen) before coming back to this place to try because I like melons.
The price of 2500 yen includes the ice-cream and they don't sell the melon without it. It makes sense since it's part of their signature but I was quite sick of ice-cream for the day. The kind staff brought me to the specials where they have melons without the packaging. She told me she could cut in half for me to eat it here. I chose the big size whole Hokkaido melon for 3000 yen (small was 2400 yen). The Hokkaido ones are slightly more expensive than the normal red fleshed melons also on sale. I asked if I could eat half and pack half. She said it was not a problem.
Here's my take. This melon was sweeter and softer than the one I had in T**a Farm!
I find that other Farm a bit too...
