I’ve only been in Ogi for less than a month and my time here has been wonderful. The people of this town have shown me grace and true kindness unlike anywhere else. On a late afternoon I was feeling a little homesick and wanted to see if I could find any American style food in my area. I just moved to Ogi and like to take walks to see what amazing secrets I’ll find. To my surprise there’s this quaint cozy pizza shop I find 10 mins away from me.
Immediately I’m greeted with authentic enthusiasm and excellent service. I order my pizza and patiently wait for it to bake. During my wait the vendor kindly grabs me a seat and even offers me a milk ice cream for free. It was very hot that day so I greatly appreciated it. Once the pizza was done the vendor and his family presented it to me and unfortunately I made the mistake of assuming I could just pay with my card. I quickly let them know I would be just a moment as I need to go to the nearest convenience store to withdraw some yen. To my surprise they entrusted me with the pizza despite not having the money on hand. This sort of grace is something you would never find where I’m from in America. I take the pizza and return to pay my fee and the vendor graciously bows and says “you’re a nice person”. All I could think in that moment was “NO! You ARE a nice person!”.
