It's tough to find good Mexican food in Japan sometimes. I've tried burrito stands, food trucks, and a few other sit-down restaurants, but for a place with really strong fundamentals, I'd rank Mike's as a strong competitor.
As you walk out of the train station, you can't miss Mike's Tex Mex. It has a yellow wall and an arch when you enter, and you can see a big "MIKE'S" in big, red letters. There is indoor and outdoor seating. When I went, there were lots of lights, pointed paper lanterns, and a Christmas tree. On the inside, there is lots of Mexican decor, different types of margarita and beer glasses, and music playing. The atmosphere is solid and does its job of temporarily transporting you out of the hustle and bustle of the city.
The food portions are fairly large by Japanese standards, which is a good thing. You won't leave hungry! They have combination plates or you can order a la carte. I had Plate E, which comes with a taco, burrito, rice, and beans. I tried a margarita, and they have their proportions right (not too sugary, not too bitter from the tequila). For my meal and drink, I paid 2400 yen (17 USD). Try their chips and salsa/guac. I can't tell if they made the chips in house but they were not your typical Tostitos chips from a bag.
Our waitress was very attentive and professional. She spoke decent english as well. This place gets pretty crowded on the weekends, so if you have a larger party, I would definitely give them a call and make a reservation. Even during the week, the indoor section was pretty full. Mike's is worth...
Read moreI've been to many different Mikes locations, there where two in Okinawa before but it's now down to one, I’ve also been to the ones outside Yokota AB, Iwakuni MCB and the original in Thailand. All these different locations are awesome and the food is very consistent throughout all the restaurants (I'm a fan of the enchiladas). Mike who lives in Thailand but makes regular trips to all his branches manages them well and keeps food quality high. If you need a Mexican food fix while your stationed in Japan this is the place to go! The great menu is topped of with a nice selection of imported Mexican beers and a variety of margaritas. Good job...
Read moreThe staff all speak English well here so when you call to make a reservation they understand well. The lighting is low and they have inside and outside seating. There is one tiny unisex toilet and you may have a bit of a wait if the place is crowded. The usual slate of Tex-Mex is on the menu - chimichanga, taquitos, etc. The food is pretty mild even when written as spicy on the menu in my opinion. They have not just Corona but also Tecate and one other Mexican beer. They don't really have a great selection of premium spirits but they do have Patron Silver and Gold so that makes up for it. Good place with...
