This was my first time trying the famous summer treat here, ayu sweetfish, and it was quite an experience. We visited on a Saturday around lunchtime, wrote our name on the waiting list, and were seated in less than 15 minutes. We ordered two ayu sweetfish sets, one luxury set which included a whole ayu sashimi, and a Hida grilled beef set for my son who does not like small fish. Personally, I am not a big fan of small fish either as there are too many bones for my liking, but I still wanted to try this local specialty. The ayu set came with one simmered ayu, one crispy deep fried ayu, and three grilled ayu. By default, the grilled ones are served in three flavours, salt, miso and vinegar. The salt grilled version can bring out the freshness and sweetness of the fish, and was easily my favourite. Next time, I would probably opt for all three to be salt grilled. I had read that the bitter organ is meant to be eaten, so I gave it a try, but it was not something I enjoyed. The fish overall was not as sweet as I had imagined. Our meal was served in a set sequence. The simmered and fried fish arrived first with all the side dishes. The warm and comforting ayu porridge came in the middle of the meal, followed by the grilled fish and sashimi towards the end. The Hida grilled beef was excellent, tender and full of flavour, although the grilling stone caused the fat to splatter quite a bit, which made cooking slightly intimidating. Staff spoke minimal English, but with smiles and gestures, everything went smoothly.

This place is a bit special. Like most restaurants in the area, it specializes in Ayu, or Sweetfish. You can get them fried, boiled, raw, and prepared in many different ways. The sashimi is really good and presented nicely, the cooked versions are intended to be eaten COMPLETELY (apart from the spines) and include guts, heads and tails. It’s not as bad as you may think! Definitely a good place to drop in to try some unusual food. Aside from the fish, they have big bottled beer for 600 yen which is always a plus. Staff are quick but not particularly talkative. Menus are in Japanese so make sure you know what you’re doing..! Atmosphere is great, there is a lovely view across the river, and if you look around the restaurant you might find some interesting stuff, like the signatures of sumo wrestlers who have eaten here. Definitely recommended.
