I came to this place with some expectations. More than two sets of friends raved about it so I had to try it. My host friend had pre-ordered an appetizer platter of green salad, buckwheat and seafood salad, potato salad with heshiko powder, omelet with sausage and onion, tempura’d fish in a tropical sauce, deli meats and toasties with pate. It was all wonderful. I’d buy the green salad dressing if I could. But then we ordered the drinks.
My friend recommended their signature lemon sour. It was so sweet that I struggled to finish it, and I took his advice and ordered the large mug. My bad. My second order of a glass of red wine was fine but I was a little put off that they wouldn’t do my order of shochu on ice. They said they could only do shochu with soda water. I wanted to point out that they do indeed serve shochu and there was ice in my water and lemon sour, so they could figure it out quite easily, but they refused me off the bat, so I didn’t try. Perhaps their shochu allotment in the shochu-soda is so low that it would be embarrassing if it were only served with ice and not all that soda.
The mains were OK, but certainly not for the price. I love carbonara pasta and I had heard so much about the chef that I was really curious to try his. The resulting product was too saucy, too seasoned and Omg way too salty for anyone’s taste at the table. No one could get through more than one bite. The noodles sat in an orange sauce that was inexplicably that colour, but had the taste been tolerable, I’d have gone with it. It wasn’t. It was something Gordon Ramsey would have spat into his nearby garbage can and complained that it was way too salty and over seasoned. This was 1500 yen but I would have taken a 400 yen Saizeriya carbonara over that tonight.
The fish in the staub pot was well presented (everything was well presented) and the broth and veggies were cooked perfectly but the fish was mush and not terribly palatable. The baby clams were, however, and the broth complemented them well, though they weren’t the star of that dish.
The beef was mediocre and chewy. The kind where you have to spit out the last bit cause it’s nearly indigestible. Well presented, the usual Parmesan sprinkled on top, a drizzle of balsamico, too. I bought NZ kalbi medallions for half price (¥400) from the supermarket earlier on the week, threw on some garlic salt and pan fried for a couple of minutes and I would rate them at double whatever these were, and they cost ¥1600. And I’m not a renowned chef.
All that, and the dishes came out very far apart. No one ate at the same time. I finished mine before the second came out and he finished his before the third. We just sat watching each other eat, rather than enjoying our meal together. I know it’s only one man in the back but it’s always nice to be able to eat together.
It was the worst meal I had this week, it cost ¥12,000 between 3 people and I’m not even a good cook, but I found some nice ingredients and cooked them adequately and managed to do better IMO. The atmosphere is nice but it’s not worth the price. Service is great. Just hoped the food could be better. Appetizers were lovely, though, that’s true.
TL;DR
Appetizers, atmosphere and service was great
Drinks: why wouldn’t you serve shochu on the rocks?? You clearly have both items. Lemon sour way too sweet and tastes like the stuff I can get out of a can.
Mains: hit and miss, i guess, but the pasta was way too salty and overseasoned to be edible, the fish was mush, the beef was basic and very chewy, you could do better at home.
Verdict: if you want to go to this place, go for lunch. Based on the reviews, it seems to be a bigger hit and less of a drain on...
