新富鮨 — Restaurant in Tomioka

This restaurant was one of the best dining experiences we had while in Japan. We were driving from Nagano to Tokyo and decided to stop for lunch based on a few glowing reviews. This place not only had 5-star sushi but it was also just an unforgettable experience all together.

We were the only foreigners in the restaurant and the old couple who runs it welcomed us in with open arms and with the help of Google translate we were able to order the nigiri set menu off their Japanese menu.

The restaurant is in a very small town conveniently just off the highway but felt like we were eating at someone’s home. Everything was beautifully decorated and felt very authentically Japanese.

The nigiri set menu comes with miso soup, a couple of other side dishes and about 10 pieces of nigiri for only 1500 yen. It was so incredibly good and the service from the warm couple made it truly memorable.

We went at lunch time, it was our first sushi in Japan. When we arrived we were treated very well and we felt very welcomed, even though we didn't know how to speak Japanese. They did so that we can understand the menu and fulfill our order.

We asked for the boss's recommendation and it was the best first experience in Japan we could have. It was very special.

The owners are very kind and helpful. Fish is fresh and always in top condition. They would recommend you good seasonal fish. Nigiri sushi set is reasonable price serve in original Hinuki wooden counter. What we like the most is how fast paced the owner makes sushi. We finish the 15-sushi nigiri course in 15 minutes.
