I have been looking forward to visiting this place since December last year. Tried to get there the first time, got lost and gave up. Today, I finally managed to locate the place. All those people saying it is in Kikuyu are wrong. It is in Thogoto on your way to Gikambura. You either take the road that goes to kikuyu hospital from the entrance to Alliance or you go up a head and enter from the Gikambura road. Unless you are headed that way or live there, it is not a place you will find easily because it is not in kikuyu town or anywhere near the highway. I heard so much about the coffee, and wanted to have a cup. When I entered, there was no one and got confused because the place was very small. I discovered that there is a back entrance to a more spacious space. It does have that café feel. There were only two other patrons so the place wasn't busy. The table I took, had not been cleaned and the wait staff took their time before attending to me. I sat next to the book shelf and couldn't understand why no one bothered to straighten the books. I finally got the menu. It isn't a huge menu but the prices are reasonable. I ordered pancakes first as I figured out which coffee I wanted and what else I would have. Was looking forward to try the coffee with goat milk. The wait staff told me that pancakes could be a while and I was okay with this. When I said I was okay, they then informed me the pancakes cannot be made because they were occupied. We were only 3 people. This pissed me off and I just ordered a black coffee. They never brought serviettes, coffee had spilled. I had been planning on what I would have for almost a month, even brought a book to read as I enjoyed my meal. As I went to get some serviettes at the counter, the chef had sat down scrolling on his phone. Very busy indeed! The coffee was good, but my excitement had died. I finished my coffee, walked to the counter to get my bill, paid and left. They were still on their phones and couldn't even be bothered to clear the table. Suffice to say, I will definitely...

Read moreCoffee 254 is a homegrown eatery that marries uptown and downtown experiences. From the front, you can mistakenly dismiss it as just another pastry shop. You take a second look because the decor calls you by name. The attendant flashes you a bug smile and welcomes you "inside."
"Inside," is a backyard transformed into ome of the most quaint coffee houses you will ever see in this part of Kikuyu town. The owner, a journalist , a farmer, and now entrepreneur has brought a little Starbucks feel to the town.
The wall paper is plastered with book covers. There are lazy chairs for you to either sit and read a book as your goat milk cappuccino is prepared or hobnob with your significant other.
I saw books with bookmarks. It tells me Kenyans are reading! I love that. Because often, I decry our poor reading culture. Coffee 254 is encouraging Kenyans to just read for reading's sake.
Their food....where to start?
I think you will have to go eat it. Every plate comes with an extra dose of love and attention. The service attendants act like family. You can slice off their warm camaraderie and apply it on toast. Coffee 254 begs you to just stay there....you lose track of time!
About the owner, Caleb Karuga, if you don't find him there making coffee himself, then he is a few metres away at his farm, Wendy Farms where he rears goats for the milk they use at Coffee 254. Or maybe, he has gone to his new branch of Coffee 254 at Big Fish restaurant in Westlands. If not, he is catching up with patrons or actively creating more parking space for them.
