POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE, EXTREMELY RUDE AND RACIST STAFF, EXTORTION

I have had an extremely horrible experience with the staff at The Food Movement in Kilifi. Upon misplacing my phone there (totally my mistake), I called to reclaim it, and I was assured that they had found it and it was safe.

When I finally called to get it back (admittedly three weeks later), they told me that the person that had it had gone home with it and they would send it to me first in the morning.

This was the first indicator of unprofessionalism because (to my understanding) staff should not be able to take customers Items home with them.

I overlooked this for the greater purpose of getting my phone as soon as possible and when i called to inquire about the progress the next morning, I was told that the person was en route to The Food Movement and that my phone would be returned to me as soon as they arrived. I was given a time frame of 30 minutes.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt but when I did not receive any communication for two hours I called back to enquire as to what was the hold up.

My call was received by the staff member that had my phone, she said she was quite busy but they would send my phone right over to my location. I hung up and waited on their rider for another hour and when there was no communication (once again), I called (again) and their staff Member told me that if I did not pay them KES 1200/= I would not get my phone back.

At this point I explained that I had not been given any indicator that this was the policy for reclaiming lost Items at The Food Movement in Kilifi. They were very rude and hung up on me. I called back again and insisted that I would not pay them and that I needed my phone urgently, that their actions were completely in bad faith and I was not happy at all.

The staff member finally agreed to give me my phone if I sent a rider. I sent my rider and called them back to explain that my rider was on the way.

Once my rider arrived he called and said that they would not give him the phone because they could not verify his identity or that I had sent him(even though I called them to give the riders information).

Eventually, my rider had to leave (still no phone). I called to stress the urgency of me getting that phone today and that I did not want to make this situation any worse than it was, they finally agreed to put my phone on a rider and send it to me.

When I did not receive the phone for yet another hour, the staff informed me that they were hurt that I said that they are completely untrustworthy. The insisted that I apologize to them for being rude and for not having the money to pay them.

I apologized to sort out the situation as soon as possible but they said that they have been so greatly angered by the situation that they will give me the phone at the end of their shift because it was at home.

At this point with all the lies and the extortion, I believe that this establishment is not operating lawfully, I believe that they do not have regard or respect for their customers. I believe that their staff have very low sense integrity because it is not past them to lie and steal and extort their customers.

I would advise against going there because I assure you they would not treat their white customers like this.

There are very many incredible and ethical businesses in Kilifi that are African owned and seek to provide a safe and inclusive space for their customer.

Be careful, because dealing with the Food Movement is a mental health hazard, their staff use rude and abusive language and have a high level of arrogance...

I looooooved it!! Stumbling upon the coffee shop in the middle of the jungle after my morning run was the highlight of my trip. You feel like you’re headed nowhere and then it hits you; unique, rustic, and set in a vintage ride. And there’s a restaurant, drinks, an outdoor gym. I loved their playlist too! The place has a vibrant vibe that makes you just wanna hang around. Perfect for intoverts like me bcs you feel like you’re in the crowd and enjoying the whole vibe while still seated in your own solo corner enjoying your coffee in a paradoxical blissful solitude with the perfect background “noise”. Of course it’s a perfect social venue if you...

Quite disheartening to be seating there without getting served for 40 minutes like white people sat and immediately got drinks.. We waited and waited and waited and we had to remind the drinks team 4 times.

The food was the worst my sister and I kept trying to get our orders in and this guy kept telling us "give me one minute" while he kept taking orders from all the white guys coming through.

It was all just so demeaning. No wonder it is based in the colonizers plantations.

We were also too hungry to walk out. My sister kept telling me let's go and I told her to just be a little patient coz we were...

This is one of the places that I visited and immediately knew that I belonged to! A cool tribe of wonderful entrepreneurs who have created a space where you can be free, enjoy the food, co-work, experience different crafts and art, meet new people and listen to good music. I really loved this restaurant and the entire space in general, I literally can’t wait to go back! The entire team has amazing people, trust worthy and very friendly… you’ll feel at home here. It’s inside the Kilifi plantation, so you’ll need a Boda boda to take you there, it’s a bit of a stretch… Enjoy The Food Movement Vibe.

Very chilled and laidback open air space. Surrounded by greenery, sleepy friendly dogs, and craft shops. Service was very slow and made several errors with orders. You have got to have patience to come here. But a great place for brunch or lunch. I had a margherita pizza, but asked for something different, the flavours were very bland and lacked salt. But great that they are able to do takeaways. It’s quite remote to get to, so you need a car to be reliable.
