Kunga Rija I have read many meanings for this name, but what is of most importance to me is how good is the food. One word says it all: fantastic! Built-in the Latvian tradition of a barn house modeled after a “landlord's barn” built by Baron Holstein, this log cabin restaurant conveys country living. After a long day of castle hopping, we went to Kunga Rija for a delightful dinner. The setting could not be finer. The restaurant, sitting alone in the country with a lake beside it, has a homey feel— perfect for a relaxing meal. We started the meal with delicious fry bread. Then, two of the group ordered succulent pork roast, and two had whole fresh trout. Everything was cooked to perfection. The trout had the perfect seasoning and came right off the bone with no effort. The generous portion of pork roast melted in our mouths. The feast was topped off with two sweet and moist chocolate lava cake with...
Read moreThe Kungu Rija was not mentioned in our Lonely Planet and we really don't know why! It is a great place that me and my family do highly recommend, especially because of the excellent food and the extremely friendly and attentive staff. There are lot's of different wines offered, our main dishes (with meat and vegetarian) and the dessert were the best we had on our trip throught Estonia and Latvia, for a relatively low pice (main dishes approximately 8-20€). Besides, the atmosphere was just great. The modern, wooden house and the small lake in front of the restaurant made us calm down and enjoy the evening.
Make a reservation to get a table for sure and if you go to Kungu Rija on a busy day be patient and don't leave before you had your food. I am sure you will not regret it.
Thanks to the Team of Kungu Rija. We will keep our 2 evenings at your place in our hearts and stomages ;)

Read moreI came there with friends, we ordered starters and a main course. We had to wait half an hour for starters, and after 1h45, main course still wasn't served.
Tables around us were getting their food presto, so we asked the waiter if he hadn't forgotten our order - he told us "5 more minutes" - 10 minutes after we asked to pay and leave. The waiter was angry about us and didn't even apologize. We had a good laugh when he told us that "the restaurant is full!" while there was absolutely no one inside.
A bit sad, we used to enjoy going there, but this bad experience really ruined it for us. We had friends from abroad and this leaved them with a definitely bad opinion of Latvian service.
We lost our afternoon, and left quite hungry. I don't know if it was a case of discrimination, incompetence, or just greed, as we didn't order alcohol, unlike...
