A HIDDEN FOREST CAFE IN PENANG 🇲🇾
We came up Penang Hill just to visit Kopi Hutan on 10 June 2025, and reached just before closing. We were the last customers of the day.
The staff were kind and didn’t rush us at all. That gesture already made us feel welcomed.
We got to sit at one of their most unique spots a round table made of glass on top of a living moss-covered base.
You could actually see small plants growing underneath through the glass. It felt like we were literally drinking coffee with nature, not just next to it.
That one table alone could’ve been a reason to come. Quiet, green, damp from the mist. Beautiful. Add the sound of birds and cool forest air, and you’ve got the perfect setting.
We had Hot Coffee served in a stainless moka pot, rich and smooth with no bitterness. They use beans from multiple countries, and you can taste the balance.
And we also ordered Tiramisu Cake! It was super soft, creamy, not overly sweet. It hit all the right notes and paired perfectly with the coffee.
We just sat there, no rush, no noise. Just the sound of nature and a table that felt alive. Everyone was relaxed except maybe the buggy guy who had to wait for us while we slowly enjoyed our “forest moment” 😆
Kopi Hutan is near to Monkey Cup Garden. From the Penang Hill upper station, you can walk (25–30 mins) or take the buggy (RM30 one-way).
We took the buggy up, and since we dined in, the return ride was free. Very convenient.
TIPS ✅ Come before 6PM (they close sharp) ✅ Ask for a table outside or near the mossy ones ✅ Tiramisu is a must ✅ Buggy is worth it if you’re saving time or energy
This isn’t a trendy cafe with loud music and crowds. This is a slow, quiet, forest cafe where the table has moss under your coffee and the moment feels intentional.
If you’re planning to visit Penang Hill, Kopi Hutan should be your first stop, not a side visit.
And if you want to know how the rest of our day went, the new tram ride, sunset, caricatures, and slow walk back, you can check out my other review under “Penang Hill.”
But for this one…Kopi Hutan is calm, green, and everything your busy life needs...

Read more*The place is pretty far from the exit point of the Penang hill tram. Just take a buggy ride there and ask them to drop you off at the cafe (RM30 per trip which can fetch about 5 persons). As long as you’ve bought something in the café you can also queue up for the café’s truck which can take you back to the Penang hill tram entrance (keep your receipt as proof to ride!).
Ambience: Unique environment here, and true to its name there is a lot of greenery in this place which offers a lot of shade from the sun. Despite that, I think they did a great job in controlling the number of insects so you won’t have to worry too much about it. The outdoor seating is also quite unique and it really does give a nice spin on the environment of how you would normally have high tea.
Service: Could be better, as they don’t really seat you to your table or take your orders there (order at the counter), but I think it is good enough given the locale. I’ve seen the staff rush to pass a customer’s receipt to them while they were queueing, and they were attentive in ensuring any finished plates were taken away quickly, so the right attitude is definitely there.
Food Decent food. Their name sake’s coffee (Kopi Hutan) was slightly stronger than I expected, but tasted good. Cakes were pretty average but I did enjoy them.
Price: Surprisingly decent, as I was expecting to be ripped off since it was in a tourist destination. However you are basically paying a pretty standard café pricing (RM 10-20) so I have no complaints there.
Conclusion Would I specifically come all the way back here again just for this café? Probably not. But if you are in Penang hill already anyway, and are looking for a place to just relax after walking around in the hot sun and to have some decent coffee, do consider...
