Asam Pedas Mak Ngah Parit Jawa is a humble warung specializing in asam pedas, introduced to me by my late father over a decade ago when he first brought our family here. This place has been around for years and is well-known locally. It’s not fancy or luxurious—just a simple roadside shack near the estuary of Parit Jawa, leading towards Pantai Leka in Muar.
The warung faces competition from several nearby asam pedas spots, so parking can be a challenge, especially when it's crowded. If you visit during midday, it can get quite hot, especially if there are no fans nearby. Thankfully, we found a shaded area by the riverside, which was cool, calm, and comfortable.
Our group of six adults and three kids was lucky to grab a large table that had just cleared. We ordered ikan mayong (giant sea catfish), ikan pari (stingray), ikan merah (red snapper), ikan jenahak (sea bream), as well as fried chicken, omelet, and kangkong goreng belacan. One serving of rice was hardly enough for me! The asam pedas itself had a perfect balance of spicy and sour, with a nice consistency—not watery and not too thick. The flavors of daun kesum and bunga kantan came together beautifully.
The owner also mentioned that they would be relocating soon due to a project planned by a royal family for the area. If, by the time you’re reading this, the warung has permanently closed, I recommend contacting the owner through the number (I've attached...

Anyway, came to this restaurant in a place known for asam pedas and ordered the Ikan Merah (Red Fish / Grouper) asam pedas. The fish is fresh and firm with the gravy more towards sour than its Melaka cousin. The gravy is also a bit more watery. Personally I prefer the Melaka variety as it has more body and depth but again it’s personal preference. Now I must describe the ‘Lokan’ which is a local clam which I’ve never had anywhere else. The freshness is evident in the distinct taste of the sea in the lokan itself. The size...it’s nearly freakishly big that it’s more on the side of chewy. But what makes it unique is it’s water ‘bags’ which burst open when you bite into it releasing that fresh sea taste.
Overall, pleasant dining (unless you’re a hygiene freak) located in picturesque surroundings. Freshness of seafood is guaranteed. And at RM48 for everything, it’s a...
