Ulu Langat Part I
The story started when few families had a staycation in Ulu Langat. From the onset I had already plotted the lunch at Langat Forest Seafood & Beer Garden, after watching a TV show featuring this restaurant where they rear their own fish.
A more laid-back town compared to the busier Cheras & Ampang, the journey took us about 45 minutes to reach Batu 14.
The restaurant is more like a giant gazebo/hut constructed entirely with steel and zinc structure with nothing but ceiling fan & natural wind to cool down the place. A rather typical Chinese restaurant settings, expect to be blasted with Jacky Cheung's songs while dining.
◾Claypot steamed tilapia - my main purpose coming here was for this dish. Using dang gui 当归 in place of usual ginger to get rid of the fishy smell, I found myself falling for the dish as I love this herb. Fish had no muddy taste to it. ◾Steamed Red Baung 紅尾虎 with black bean sauce - firm & sweet meat coupled with the salty black bean & spiciness from cili padi. ◾German pork knuckle - crispy skin, fall-off-the-bone meat paired with the Mongolian style sauce. ◾Salted egg sotong - I could taste the salted egg yolk sauce in every bite. ◾Sizzling bean curd - no brainer dish for the young ones. ◾Shrimp paste kangkung in claypot - pungent smell yet couldn't get enough of this. ◾Kangkung belacan - classic dish done well.
Most of the dishes were very well-executed and while I don't mind coming back again if I happen to be in this area, they should clean the ceiling as it was a distraction for me.
We headed to our staycation...
Read moreMy 1st time here since I was around the vicinity after a traditional TCM Bone massage at Ulu Langat, Selangor. This property is located in a Huge private land which is hidden in the forest away from the rest. I'm guessing it caters for Tour buses since it was pretty remote and up in the hills.
Since I was the Only person there, the meals were served within 10 mins except for the fish which took a lil bit more to steam. Ordered some mixed vegetable which consists of brinjal, long beans, four-angled vegetables, petai aka stinky beans, okra and garlic. Absolutely fresh and crunchy. Next, the Owner, Weng, recommended a 50 gm Grass Fish 🐟 cooked in sesame oil and garlic 🧄 since I wanted to try some seafood. This fish feeds on Grass only hence the name aka Ikan Rumput. 🌿 Very Fresh, chewy texture but U gotta be careful when eating it as it's Full of bones!😬 No MSG was added in the meal. Whacked it wt a small bowl of rice 🍚 which seems more than sufficient. Overall, the food was good, it would be better if my family or friends were around to enjoy the food. The bill came up to RM 80. Pretty pricey for a solo eater! 😩 Had to leave the place soon as it was getting real dark and the roads were very winding on the way back. Nevertheless a great adventure out...

Place was quite ample and not too crampy. Got some view of pond for fish and green scenery view.
Service staff was good, but over friendly and over pushy, non stop asking whether want to drink coconut, despite telling want to drink Chinese tea only 😅🥲
For 3 pax, ordered 3 dishes initially and say that should be enough, kept on saying not much and size won't be too huge, so ask us to add one pork dish. Mind that we had order 1 whole fish & 1/2 chicken already.
Then another thing also not so pro and good in suggesting dishes cooking flavor, which totally clashes one with another.
About the price for 4 dishes, rice, tea & 1 coconut around RM 230, which I think rather expensive.
Among so many choice of restaurant nearby, would I return? I believe not in a long long period will ever come back here.
Too pushy and not pandai to recommend dish and quite pricey pushing the dish that not nice.
The rice wine chicken broth was good and just nice for my tastebud was not too overwhelming with the rice wine taste. Can give this dish a try as I found this dish...
