I went to Salman Nasi Kandar on yesterday afternoon. I have been told that the Nasi Kandar there is on par (or better than Penang). So lets deep into the review.
Atmosphere:
1)There are no designated parking space for the shop. There are few space infront of the shop tjat you can park (can fit like 5 to 6 cars maybe), other than that you will have to park on side roads. If you are bringing your elderly, i suggest to drop them first then you will go and find parking.
Service:
the staffs are friendly. Very helpfull if you need to add on more food. Cashier is friendly. Not much complaint on the staff
food selection is okay. The visual of the food is nice. Maybe the food prep area need to be clean frequently. But again, i went there during lunch time. They are overwhelmed with customers.
Food:
the nasi kandar is a rip off concept of Nasi Lemak Royale. Which is also a Rip Off from Nasi Kandar Penang. So copy is okay. We can see china copying japan and west for quite some time and now they are way better than the original producer.
The Nasi they use are called Nasi Kuning (Yellow colour). Quite flavourfull but sadly at that time the nasi is too mushy (lembik?). The problem is normal nasi able to absorb the gravy when you put onto it. Since the nasi is wet, it cant absorb the gravy thus making the rice not so delicious.
the ayam goreng (fried chicken). The batter they used is bad. I dont think that is the normal batter you used for ayam goreng. Sure it makes you fried chicken got really huge crusty feeling. But the taste? It feels like you are eating banana fritter. It feels like it in my mouth. I cant finished the dish because the nasi and the ayam doesnt taste good and chive together in a perfect blend. But at least the portion of chicken is big. Better tahn those in KFCMalaysia.
their papadom is the best. Really good. If you have been to Sulaiman Penang, Rafee Penang, Pokok Ceri Penang, Kapitan Penang, Cargas Penang, line clear penang, Din Maju Penang, the papadom is hence better or on par with Penang Nasi Kandar. Good job on the papadom.
Conclusion:
If you have familiar eating Nasi Kandar from Penang, most of Penangites will say that the dish is bad.
Maybe thats how the local here in Central region like their nasi kandar.
Advice:
The main highlight is the yellow rice (nasi minyak) which gives a nice texture, the spice-laden gravy and the sambal belacan.
Dishes are nice although not a lot of variety. The gravy mixture is great if you don't like the black sweet gravy that is often served at a lot of nasi kandar places. The gravy here is a lot more aromatic with spice flavours but not too heat-spicy.
Not many nasi kandar places offer a side of sambal belacan but I love almost every nasi kandar place that offers it because the sambal belacan just cuts through the richness of the gravy very well. The belacan flavours also add an extra pungent dynamic to the dish. Every mouth, you're just getting hit with a flavour rollercoaster. Overwhelming in a good way.
I like the rice because it feels fluffy and gives off a very satisfying mouthfeel. Flavour wise, I can't really tell because the gravy and sambal has just overpowered everything.
This meal is very heavy. Very likely to give you a food coma afterwards 🤣
Upkeep of place is good. Ordering system is orderly. Most people just seem to park at the road illegally. The area is quite far out from the main township so it doesn't seem to be regulated tightly for the parking.
Is it worth the hype? I was...
Read moreBeing a nasi kandar lover myself, this place has always piqued my interest since I've heard about it. Needless to say, we make our way to the location and upon arrival, we were greeted with a line of people queueing up. The ordering system here is straightforward where you simply tell the abang staff what you would like to have. This is made simpler by the fact that they do not have plenty of dishes available and that helps to narrow down your selections. We got their must have ayam goreng, 2 servings of daging kicap, telor asin and kobis. One can also help themselves with their in house sambal. I feel that the rempah aromatics of the ayam goreng can be upped here and the batter can be lighter. On the other hand, I enjoy the kobis because it gives that nice crunch and I can taste the spices. The other highlight for me is the daging kicap. I am amazed by the portion size and if you enjoy sweetness in a rich savory kuah, you'll be delighted with this one. The daging was tender but some parts can be rather chewy. The nasi minyak is a little too glutinous...
