This place has good reviews. That was the main reason I decided to give it a try. It is located along the main road towards a popular tourist attraction, Makan Mahsuri. Probably why they decided to rename their restaurant to Mahsuri from their original name, Rumah Makan Tok Abah. Easier to remember. Though, their menu still carries the original name.
The place does try to recreate an atmosphere reminiscent to the early 60s Malaysia. Time when black and white P.Ramlee movies were made. But they need more work to be on par with some restaurants who have managed successfully to fool us into believing we stepped back in time. Perhaps the staff could be in period clothing. Seating is not as comfortable as it could be.
Now the food and drinks. I will say that their beverages are above average. It's probably the best I had during my 4 day stay in Langkawi. They should pay the drink maker well, lest he move to a better place. The food is acceptable. My group ordered a wide variety. We had English breakfast, Peknga gulai ikan, nasi lemak ayam goreng, roti titab and mushroom soup. Not bad but not great. Prices were reasonable. That...
Read moreThe concept of this restaurant is quite charming, featuring an old-Malay vibe that feels nostalgic and inviting.
I ordered quite a spread: Nasi Lemak, Bihun Soto, Bubur Nasi Berlauk, English Breakfast, Dim Sum, and Roti Sangkaya. Honestly, I’m not convinced the dim sum here qualifies as a proper set — maybe refine it before keeping it on the menu. Also, don’t expect too much from the English Breakfast; it’s pretty basic.
My favorite of the day was the Roti Sangkaya — the bread was freshly steamed, soft and fluffy, dipped in kaya mixed with evaporated milk, and paired perfectly with a cup of Kopi Kampung.
The Nasi Lemak was okay, but both Bihun Soto and Bubur Nasi Berlauk could use more depth in flavor to really stand out.
They also have a live band, which adds a lively vibe. Personally, I’m not a fan since it makes socializing harder, especially with the extra noise from the nearby road.
One thing worth noting: for a restaurant with this concept, the food-to-price ratio is great — affordable.
Overall, an interesting spot with a unique concept and some standout items — worth trying if you’re...
Read moreoverall was good experience since my rating is bery modest so 3 star is quite good. come at 9am which is very busy so need to wait a lil bit. but by 10 the crowd already cleared up. so can come at that time if u hate to wait. the food that i try is sikmak telur mata and they use ikan masin instead of ikan bilis. it is quite nice if their sambal not on masin side. if the sambal is more to manis/pedas side combine with the ikan masin i think it would be a great sikmak. I also try the sangkkaya. they use something like pandan agar2 as the pencicah i i find it quite nice compared to my fav sankgkaya place, boat noodle. the lontong for is quite nice but im not a longong eater so dont take my words for it but i think it is worth to try. would definitely...
