Cozy ambiance, but with a few challenges Pizza Hills provides a cozy, intimate setting atop a hill, surrounded by nature. However, getting there was tricky due to narrow roads and limited parking spaces, which made the arrival less convenient than expected. Not handicapped or disability accessible.
Artisanal concept, but the value doesn’t add up While the omakase-style pizza concept is intriguing, the overall experience was hit or miss. The lack of a clear menu or listed prices for daily specials leaves diners unsure of what they’re getting. Although we understand that premium ingredients are harder to come by on a remote island, paying RM68 for a regular-sized pepperoni pizza with arugula seemed excessive. Furthermore, the server did not specify the types of cheese used, which left us unsure about what exactly we were paying for. All in all we paid close to RM300 for 2 pizzas (1 chicken, 1 beef) with 2 drinks and 1 dessert pizza with brown butter.
Better value and options in the city To add to this, similar if not better artisanal pizza experiences are available in the city, offering more transparency with their ingredients and at nearly half the price. The steep cost at Pizza Hills was hard to justify, especially considering the inconsistency in the overall experience.
Limited drink selections and service gaps The drink selection was another downside. The only still water options were overpriced Aqua Panna or Sanpellegrino, with no other alternatives offered. Additionally, ice was only provided upon request—something that should be automatic, especially given the hot, humid conditions of the island. Considering that the restaurant doesn’t have air conditioning, the lack of attentiveness in offering ice added to the discomfort.
Suggestions for improvement Pizza Hills has great potential, but it would benefit from listing daily pizza specials with clear pricing, offering more drink options, and improving service by being more attentive to customers’ needs. For the price point, the overall experience needs refinement to match the premium...
Read moreThis is not a restaurant... it’s an experience you will remember for a long time! A semi-open shack connected to Chef Lance’s home in the hills of Langkawi, surrounded by jungle, his mini farm, ducks and his herb garden that features plenty of basil plants.
What you will find, once you find PH, is OUT OF THIS WORLD pizza, 48 hour proof sourdough made with calmness, passion and LOVE and the finest, freshest, mostly local ingredients ("tomato are farmed by a friend") including Langkawi produced Mozzarella and Ricotta from @99_island_cheese (flour and olive oil are imported from Italy). Chef Lance runs the show - there are no employee servers, cashiers or dish washers... except the monkeys in the surrounding trees. Lance trained as a Chef at a Michelin star restaurant in France and more - this is clearly a labour of love born of the pandemic (a welcome effect of it!).
Getting there is a journey and part of the experience - the location is not on Grab (yet) so find a local driver that can find it and who will wait nearby and take you back smiling. There is little parking at PH which is located up a short, narrow steep jungle “road”... but the result at the end of the journey may well be the best pizza and adventure culinary dinner in the Country!
PH is closed on Mondays, serves dinner only from 4PM and advance reservations are essential. Cash or bank transfers only...and it is all 100% worth every cent !
The oven is wood fired of course, is self made and by Lance (he says next time he will make it slightly lower to the ground) and it simply delivers Pizza perfection at 800 degrees C in a few minutes. So good is the dough that even when the pizza is cold, it remains soft and worthy of every crumb.
SIMPLY PURE...
Read moreIf you want a truly magical evening, look no further and make a reservation here, I promise, you will not be disappointed! Came here with a friend in August (TWICE) during our 6 days stay in the beautiful Langkawi. We initially did not know they were not opened for lunch and ended up coming back again in the evening because we just had a feeling it was gonna be amazing.
Lance and his staff were incredibly warm and inviting. The cosy restaurant sits atop a hill, aptly named Pizza Hills (of course), easily accessible via a Grab ride. Susu and another gorgeous brown dog greeted us and we were whisked away to a menu-less evening! (Yes, you heard right!)
On our first time there, we were spoiled with the tastiest Calzone topped with a homemade honey balsamic vinaigrette reduction, with fresh ricotta, truffle, portobello mushroom and more. Of course, we could not miss out on the dessert pizza as well! I'll let the glorious picture speak for itself for this beautiful kaya, brown butter and gula melaka creation! (consider our minds officially blown by this flavour explosion - think fireworks in Ratatouille)
On our 2nd time there, we had a spinach, honeycomb, cherry tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella and fennel pizza with a garlic base. I never knew how well the fennel would work with those ingredients and on a pizza but it was the perfect balance of flavour and we really could not stop eating (!).
Bonus: If you're an animal lover, the dogs (Susu!) and cats there are really adorable and the folks at Pizza Hills really do such great work to rescue and care for strays.
Can't wait to be back! xx
TLDR: Make a reservation, you'll thank yourself for it after ;) You can tell the food's made with love (the most coveted ingredient...
