KK EATS: SALUT SEAFOOD RESTAURANT 🇲🇾 // Seafood feast and always a must-visit when back here in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. They rear their own prawns and it is the best fresh prawns - without any digestive tracts as they place the prawns in clean water to clear the tracts before cooking them. This method means there’s no need to de-vein the prawns and it’s blanched whole and fresh. Just look at the mud crabs with heaps of crab roe. Also the fresh garlic kangkung stir-fry. Washed down with fresh and sweet pandan coconuts. 😍 This whole table of food including the fresh coconut drinks came to RM234 (equivalent to around aud83). Tell me where can you find such value for seafood as fresh as these? Located right next to mangroves, the sunset views are stunning here. The restaurant is built on wooden stilts and open-air. Come here to enjoy the seafood amidst nature. No social media account, just word of mouth. #KotaKinabalu #SalutSeafoodRestaurant #Salut #Seafood #Tuaran #Sabah #Prawns #MudCrabs #Malaysian #MalaysianFood #SabahFood #KKFood #MalaysiaTrulyAsia #PerthFoodReview #PFRinKK #PFRinMalaysia #PFR_SalutSeafoodRestaurant

A lot of people say when you come to Gayang, must try the seafood. They say you can find the most delicious seafood with cheap price here. We had tried 2 restaurants here, one is Gayang and another one is Salut. Both so so only. Last night we ate at Salut, 2 persons Rm 80 , it wasn't cheap as people told , I think it is consider standard price like any seafood restaurants in KK city. Talking about the taste, nothing so special, it was consider poor cooking, like normal canteen cooking. For example, Fried Squid one plate at Rm 38, the butter was so plain, at least should put salt, pepper, chicken stock or MSG. I am sure housewife who cook a lot, knows better than me. The Kangkung belacan, not spicy at all, no aroma of belacan at all, they should fried the garlic a bit longer in time and put a bit fried small shrimp to increase the taste. The ginger onions stir fried Sabah clams only gave a very strong oyster sauce and the clams not very fresh. May be over promoted by local people, if you are from Semenajung, from West Malaysia, you will regret to be here. For me, never try never know, right? #Salut #Gayang #Tuaran

Salut Seafood Restaurant is located on the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu. We first heard of it from some travel blog and confirmed the place with our local Sabahan friends. So we took a 35 minutes drive from our place (near Waterfront) and after some kampung roads, we reached. Salut greeted us with their fish/prawn farms followed by the restaurant's building on stilts. The place has a very fishing village feel, with lots of wooden planks. Ordering food was easy though. We just needed to figure out the amount of prawn, fish or/and crab we want and the style of cooking. We chose kam heong crab and butter prawns. And like most other reviews, the prawn was actually better. The food was quite affordable actually, with prawns at 70/kg and crabs at 48/kg Brotip: come in the evening for a scenting view of the sunset

To SALUT SEAFOOD RESTAURANT Owner, if you cannot cope with too many customers, you may put a sign at the entrance. Let your customers know in polite way that your restaurant is full house.

I wanna share our experience tonight at your restaurant. As we reached there, we queue to place order, this 1 old chinese aunty was so RUDE talking very loud with her angry face expression saying to all customers in queue "BOLEH TUNGGU? X BOLEH TUNGGU BALIK! SINI BANYAK MEJA BELUM ADA MAKAN. TUKANG MASAK 1 ORANG SAJA!"

Is that how you treat your customers? When our turn to order, we wanna order salted egg prawn. Her answer was "HAIYAAA!! TIADA TIADA! TIADA ORANG BUKA KULIT! REBUS SAJA!! Then when we wanna order chicken, her answer was "TIADA TIADA AYAM!!" We want to order fish, she said all big ahh. Ok nevermind we said ok. But only can do steam fish. Other style cannot!! Then she said "CUKUPLAH" we cannot add more order.

There is another story after that. We already told the pink shirt aunty nicely, if cannot cope please put "FULL HOUSE" signage at the entrance. But she kept yelling at us. Then we went to the cashier, spoken to another aunty at the cashier, still get the same BAD REPLY. We wanted to settle this matter in proper way at the restaurant but since they cannot accept customer feedback, so this post was made.

But my sharing here was to let SALUT RESTAURANT OWNER know how your customers being treated. We don't mind to wait, but we don't deserve to be treated this way.

To RUDE AUNTY, whether you are the restaurant owner or the family member, you still don't have the right to treat your customer badly!

Actually, my family and I always come here every time I visit home. It’s like a family tradition. But this time, our experience was really awful. The old lady, I assume the owner who takes orders was awfully rude to me. I wanted to make my order. I asked for prawn, soft shell crab, siput tarik etc. but only prawn was available (I didn’t mind this). However, the old lady’s was so rude saying everything is not available. Also, When I asked her what is available, she answered in chinese in which I didn’t understand. When I told her I do not understand, she rolled her eyes and sighed at me. Wow, at this point I didn’t know who’s the customer anymore. So I asked again what is available cause we came all the way here and there is no turning back as I am heading back to overseas that day. She said nothing is available in a very rude and snappy way. At this point I got fed up and asked if the restaurant is closed for the day. She then burst and complained to me that her supplier did not arrived because of the rain and continued to say it is not her choice that there is nothing that day. Please keep in mind, she was saying all this snappily and crustily. I didn’t came to listen to her complaints nor to fight. So I told her to relax and just ordered a few dishes that were available. I mean the food is ok, if there are no fresh supplies today, which happens in biz, I didn’t mind it but the way she spoke really threw me off. Next time I will never go here anymore. Thank you for the...

A detailed and brutally honest review:

In all honesty, this place falls short of its once stellar reputation as the best and oldest seafood spot in town. Unfortunately, it seems to have lost its charm and is no longer worth the visit. For tourists unaware of better and more affordable options in Kota Kinabalu, this might come as a disappointing surprise.

Pros:

Waiting time is reasonable, with dishes arriving in quick succession. The fish is exceptionally fresh, it didn't have the common fishiness associated with frozen or long-stored fish.

Cons:

The overall decor is lackluster, resembling a shabby wooden hut. While some may not mind, it does impact the overall dining experience. The food is disappointingly plain, lacking the robust flavors expected from standard Asian dishes. For instance, the kangkung belacan lacked belacan flavor, offering only an oily taste. The calamari, although fresh, lacked flavor and texture, missing the desired crispiness. The fish, while delicious, was marred by an overly sweet Thai sauce, resembling more of a sugar-water coating. Prices are unreasonably high for the plain taste offered, making it less competitive and not justifying the overall...
