Fins & Gills - Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Saint Paul's Bay

First things first, this fish 'n chips joint is without a doubt the tops of its type in all of Malta, and perhaps even the best of all time. Crispy and flaky on the outside, soft and fresh inside, while flavourful and absolutely amazing all around. Delicious it is.

What really puts this place above all else is its incredible dedication to customer service. The guy taking orders was helpful, patient and friendly, despite it being very busy. But who really deserves a gold star is the dude with the ponytail, who was absolutely busting his arse, moving at a lightning quick speed to keep up with the rush of customers this place probably gets on a nightly basis. Sooooo awesome to see such a strong work ethic when the time calls for it. Dude was freaking flying like a fish.

While so many places charge for ketchup or mayo nowadays, the staff member who helped take the order was happy to provide all the condiments you need, free of charge, including the tartar sauce.

Even 2 hours later, we're still talking about how mouth-wateringly tasty this gem of a meal was. While they do offer seating outside the shop, we ate by the sea, which is just a 5-minute walk.

I've been eating at this place for about 4 years or so. I've never left there disappointed.

I mainly have the cod and chips. Each portion is very filling and I usually split a portion with another person and we're still full afterwards. You get a sizeable amount of chips, which are not soft and floppy in texture (always a plus), but are not too crispy or burnt.

I never tried the fish of the day or salmon, though just looking at the chefs cooking it, I can see that it is prepared well.

I've had a few pieces of fried calamari from here before and while I'm not much of a fan of calamari in general, they're quite delicious here.

The tartar sauce here puts most expensive restaurants' tartar sauce to shame.

The only downside to this place is that on certain days you'll have to wait a while for food if they have a lot of people, but I feel that is also a testament to just how good this place is.

And the staff is also very friendly and chill to have a chat with.

Incredible fish and chips can be found here. Arriving early allowed me to witness the fresh beer batter being prepared. Came here strictly for the fish and chips and was not disappointed. There was the option of either perch or cod, and opted for the perch. The portions were generous as I was considering ordering two since I was famished at the time. The batter was incredibly flavorful and delightfully crunchy. The fries were plentiful, crisp and salty, all perfect to be washed down with a local beer. The fish and chips start off at 7 and 7,95€ for the cod and perch, respectively. You will also find on the simple menu frutti misto (mixed fish), fresh grilled salmon, fish cake burger, fish pancakes, and calamari. All less than 9€. The interior is quite small with a few seating option outside so you can enjoy the sunshine. Will definitely visit this location again and highly...
