The Fortress — Restaurant in Saint Paul's Bay

Unfortunately didn't live up to the standard of previous years. We have frequented this restaurant regularly over the years and always rated it 5/5. This was a totally different experience. Prawn cocktail and soup were ordered as starters to be followed with a Chinese platter and then main courses of fish and pulled pork. Despite clarifying with the staff that this was to be served in 3 separate course starters and platter arrived together. Soup was luke warm to say the least. Prawn cocktail was OK but beware it does have egg in it. Just if anyone has allergies. Then surprise surprise main courses arrived whilst we still had our starter and platter We had to send them back as we weren't ready for them. Once main courses arrived I asked for the pot of gravy that was advertised with the pulled pork only to be told there wasn't one as it was an old menu. As I felt, after tasting, it needed the gravy I returned the meal. No apology at all. The fish which was supposed to be in bread crumbs was actually in overcooked batter.im not sure if this had been refried to warm it up after being served for the second time. This also had to be returned and we ended up ordering a main course at another restaurant. It's such a shame as our previous visits have been amazing. Im not sure if we were considered to be tourists and didnt matter but actually we live just behind restaurant....

I recently hosted a private event at The Fortress Restaurant, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. Insgesamt waren wir hier drei mal Abendessen. Das erste Mal hat uns die Freundlichkeit und der Service insgesamt überzeugt (die Aussicht auf den Hafen bei Nacht ebenso). Die Essen (Salat und BBQ Rips) waren nicht schlecht aber auch nichts besonderes. Genau das was man bei diesem Preis erwarten kann. Auf unsere Nachfrage, ob es hier auch einen maltesischen Likör gibt, hat der Kellner uns gleich zwei aufs Haus geschenkt. Tolle Aktion! Der maltesische Chardonney war auch lecker. Somit entschieden wir nochmals zu kommen, da auch noch Platten auf der Karte standen, die uns reizten. Ein paar Tage später haben wir Lahmacun und die sizilianische Platte versucht. Die türkische Pizza ist außergewöhnlich erfrischend und anders als in Deutschland und hat bei uns einen WOW Effekt erzeugt (für nur ca. 5€!). Die Platte hingegen hat uns enttäuscht, eine kalte Platte mit verschiedenem Fisch um diesen aufs Brot zu legen. Lachs, Schwertfisch und noch etwas. Frittierte Tintenfischringe gab es dazu. Gefühlt war alles aus dem Supermarkt und die Tintenfischringe Tiefkühlkost. Für ca. 10€ aber in Ordnung. Der Service war weiterhin sehr gut und man hat uns sogar wieder erkannt - toll. Am Mittwoch und Donnerstag gibt es ein Menü für 18€ mit Wein, Vor- und Hauptspeise zur Auswahl. Wir entschieden uns aber dagegen, weil wir unbedingt noch einmal eine so leckere Lahmacun essen wollten... aber diesmal wurden wir enttäuscht. Hat sich von der Qualität schlechter angefühlt als das letzte mal, vielleicht weil am Vortag Ruhetag war und es das Menü gab. Schade jedenfalls. Die Chickenplatte - die wir erst erhielten nachdem wir ein falsches Essen erhielten - hatte eher Fastfood Charakter, aber war trotzdem lecker. Unbedingt Probieren: Sparkling Rose Wine aus Malta. Der Wein war wieder ein WOW Erlebnis und absolut lecker! Die Flasche für ca. 13€. Auch beim dritten Mal hat uns der Service voll und ganz überzeugt: Aufs Haus gab es wieder einen maltesischen Likör, weil zuerst das falsche Essen gebracht wurde. Auch diesmal hat man uns am Anfang gleich erkannt und wie immer nett begrüßt. Alles in allem waren wir sehr zufrieden, schade nur, dass die Qualität der Essen unterschiedlich war. Wer trotzdem gut und günstig Essen gehen möchte, muss hier einfach vorbei schauen und allein schon wegen dem schönen Blick...
