Rhumerie de Chamarel is a place where Rum Meets Paradise

Nestled amidst lush tropical greenery and rolling hills, the Rhumerie de Chamarel is a hidden gem on the island of Mauritius. As you approach, the scent of sugarcane and the promise of exquisite rum hang in the air. The setting alone is enough to transport you to a state of relaxation and wonder.

The distillery tour is relatively short experience. Guides lead you through the rum-making process, from the freshly harvested sugarcane to the copper stills where magic happens. You'll learn about fermentation, distillation, and aging—the alchemical steps that turn humble juice into liquid gold. The pleasure is witnessing the giant oak barrels where the rum matures, each one holding secrets and stories.

After the tour, you're invited to a tasting session. Picture this: a rustic wooden table adorned with crystal-clear glasses, each containing a different expression of Rhumerie de Chamarel's craft. From light and floral to rich and robust, their range covers the spectrum. Sip, savor, and let the flavors dance on your palate. The staff's passion for their product is contagious—they'll share anecdotes and flavor profiles, making the experience even more memorable.

Now, here's the insider tip: While the distillery tour and tasting are wonderful, the real treasure lies in the boutique. Yes, you can purchase their exceptional rums right there. But wait, there's more! Remember how you mentioned buying it cheaper elsewhere? Well, brace yourself: You can indeed find Rhumerie de Chamarel's bottles at duty-free shops or local markets for a better price. So, if you're a savvy traveler, enjoy the tasting, soak in the views, and then discreetly make your shopping list...

Beautiful restaurant, lots of Rum and great food!

This restaurant cum distillery is set up in a beautiful location by the black river gorges park in Chamarel. The restaurant itself is very well designed and it’s such a great experience to simply enter it.

Remember, if you opt to take lunch at the restaurant - the distillery tour is COMPLIMENTARY!

We decided to have lunch at the restaurant first and then do the distillery tour. The service for lunch was amazing. Food is absolutely delicious with a fine dining experience. We decided to take the petit riviera lunch package. The welcome cocktail drink with rum and lemon was very nice and refreshing! This was followed by main course and We tried braised lamb and pork. Meat was tender, soft and simply melted in mouth. The sauce with the meat complemented it so well and was absolutely delicious. We then had a crime brûlée for dessert with local sugar in it. It was heavenly! After this, we were offered coffee and rum.

The distillery experience was good. You get an overview of the process. You are also offered a free cocktail with rum in it and get to taste 8 varieties of rum. This is was very informative although I think this could be a bit more elaborate and interesting! Also, we had so many batches near us with different guides explaining each group that got distracting.

In summary, this is a beautiful restaurant with great rum, brief distillery visit and good...

Agricole Style (cane juice) rum produced in pot and column stills and the aged rum is blended together to produce the style of rums. Interestingly they don’t use the word rhum but use rum which is traditionally associated with molasses based production techniques.

Either way their rums are good. Production works hard to reduce the traditionally grassy and lighter notes to produce a popular rum.

They say copper pot still but all I saw was a stainless steel port with a copper lid which is stretching the truth a little in my books. I saw the old copper pot outside the victim of use.

I tried they aged products which gradually gets better and better at hiding the original agricole styles then I tried their finished rums. Port and Sauternes casks were my favourite. Ended up buying the Sauternes cause it wasn’t so heavily flavoured and I could still pick out the grassy notes.

The private tasting was good but a little hurried as though the guide had somewhere better to be and wanted me to drink up and go, which did disappoint me a little. He was learned but seems to run through script as fast as he could.

Lunch at the restaurant was excellent, had a cocktail which after a tasting was a lot for me. Food was delicious I had the prawns and my wife had the fish. Dessert was the cooked pineapple with vanilla ice cream and the crème brûlée. YUM!

Overall a great experience. Would...

Skip the Paid Tour – Visit Only If Dining at the Restaurant We visited the Rhumerie de Chamarel after enjoying a fantastic lunch at their on-site restaurant, L’Alchimiste. Because we dined there, we were offered the rum distillery tour and tasting for free — which, in our opinion, was fair given the overall quality and impact of the tour. The tour itself was somewhat lackluster. It consisted of a quick walkthrough of the facility, with explanations that felt rote and uninspired, lacking both depth and enthusiasm. There was very little storytelling or insight into the rum-making process, which made it feel more like a formality than a true behind-the-scenes experience. The tasting included 11 samples, mostly unaged rums and liqueurs, served in rapid succession with minimal context. While it was interesting to try such a variety, the overall experience lacked the substance and engagement we had hoped for. Had we paid for the tour separately, we would have been disappointed — it simply didn’t offer enough value to justify the cost. But as a complimentary add-on to a meal at L’Alchimiste, it felt appropriate and added a light, casual finish to an otherwise excellent lunch. In short: if you’re planning to visit, make a reservation at the restaurant and enjoy the tour as a bonus. It’s not worth paying for on its own, but as a free extra, it’s a fine way to round out the visit.
