This place went so far above and beyond expectations for a restaurant located in a tropical resort. It is top notch dining experience in almost every way. The food is phenomenal, a plethora of flavors explored and incorporated. The cocktail menu creative and wide ranging. The design is beautiful and understated making the restaurant approachable. Capped off with exquisite service, Rubra is clearly thoughtful and intentional in delivering a delicious culinary experience.
I was traveling solo and able to post up at the bar, where both the regular and tasting menu were available. I went with the latter and it was the right call; a fantastic way to try the wide range of food options listed on the menu. While I did not love every dish, the majority were delicious, the standouts for me being the Tomato Tostada and the Tuna Belly main. If I did not have dinner plans elsewhere the second night of my trip, I would have gone back and reordered those. I did a handful of their cocktails - debated switching to wine, but they were just too good.
If you’re staying at the W, you should absolutely make time for Rubra, but I give that same recommendation to those who would need to make a trek to get to the restaurant. Appreciate that being a “resort restaurant” can sometimes have negative connotations, but that is not the case here. Rubra is a destination in and of itself. Its tasting menu is one of my top all time meals; I recommend this...
Read moreWe went for the tasting menu at Rubra during our stay. The restaurant had an amazing atmosphere and really unique utensils that elevated the experience. They offered some kid friendly options like grilled cheese and quesadilla, but we opted to order some a la carte items and sharing some of the food from the tasting menu with the little ones.
For the tasting menu, almost all of the dishes were fantastic. Some highlights for me were the beignet, scallops, clams, shrimp albondiga and the tuna belly. The complimentary sweets at the end was also delicious.
There were also a couple of disappointments, I was really looking forward to the porcini broth, but it wasn't quite what I expected. And the banana flower really wasn't done well. It had a really bitter taste to it. We couldn't finish it because it would have ruined our appetite.
Other than that, the service was top notch which provided for an excellent and memorable experience. My older kid rated this as his favorite restaurant of our trip and was asking when we can...
Read moreWell where does one start? This place was amazing from first entering to finishing the meal/paying the bill. The food was different ingredients & flavour combinations that paired so well together. Honestly things I would never think that would blow the taste buds like they did. I would say there were highlights but I truly enjoyed every dish as they all were so unique. This is definitely something to experience. It is not cheap but based on the quality of the food it is easy to tell why. The service was impeccable with servers explaining every dish. Restaurant was busy but dishes came out and I never thought there was too long of a delay between dishes. I had amazing service as a solo diner sitting at bar. It is easy to tell why the chef is so highly regarded and why this restaurant won best new restaurant in Mexico. Well done to the whole team. If you want a meal to remember this is your place. I can’t wait to be...
