In over two years of looking for places to try an array of Oaxacan dishes, this one stands out as the best i have found. I've been back almost ten times.
At the end of this review i'll list a random assortment of things i've enjoyed at Sabor de Antequera, 'Flavour of Oaxaca' - 'Antequera' being the original name of this colonial city.
The price has climbed steadily from 150 to 170 pesos as of this writing, and yet this isn't enough to prevent it being filled with families on holiday afternoons. If you talk to locals enough you'll find that nearly everyone knows about this place, but mostly under its previous name, La Escondida. The original owners were very well known in the Oaxaca valley and their story is legendary, but they both passed on to the big buffet in the sky and as long as i have been here it has been under the new ownership.
Over a hundred options on the buffet plus a la carte selections are likely to please anyone. It's the kind of place you can bring your vegan friends to eat at the same table as those with SIBO who are on a strict meat-only regimen.
Often a skilled Mariachi band or a solo troubadour will pass by your table asking to play for coin. While many Mexicans and many of the older foreigners love to dress up to go out, you can see on a busy day that fairly casual dress is acceptable too.
The playground on the north side of the main seating pavilion has a decent array of equipment and is occasionally staffed with face-paint artists and other enthusiastic entertainers. You can also just sit nearby and you can see your kids from where you eat.
For special events they will rent the eastern seating area, which has space for dancing and a live band.
Be sure to tip the parking attendants if you bring a vehicle and want to spread goodwill! I give them ten or twenty...
Read moreAbsolutely a must visit eat as much as you can buffet restaurant in Oaxaca at very reasonable price. The food is great, freshly prepared everyday. Their buffet probably encompass a wide range of classic food the state of Oaxaca has to offer. The place is huge and according to the owner (his dad, the person who started it all passed back in January, bless him), and i don't have any reason to disagree with him because i have seen it with own eyes, can accommodate around 900 people continuously coming in and out. The service is great and very attentive because rotation is the key but not at any point while we were there, we felt the pressure we had to leave to make room for next customers waiting in line outside. Their service is amazing about ninety professional and smiling waiters working in harmony throughout the day. Amazing place, definitely recommended, it totally...
Read moreThis place was wonderful. It's children friendly, which was a huge thing for us. Our children were able to play in their play area, and they sat us close to the area so we would be able to see them. They also had face painting, which our kids loved. They have a huge variety of different food from tacos, meats, fish, enchiladas, soups, salads, fruits, and desserts. They offer mezcal drinks, beers, and other alcoholic beverages. I had a guava mezcal that was just delicious, and I would definitely recommend it. The waiter was wonderful. As soon as we came in, we were given complementary shots and an appetizer. This was one of the best services we have ever had. The place and staff overall was wonderful. We will definitely be returning on...
