This is a lively, modern beach restaurant! The menu is filled with really great food, and many tasty options, including great finds for vegetarians and vegans, too. They also make very high quality cocktails, prepared with a mixologist mindset and ingredient list.
On my way out, I also spotted takeaway fresh-baked muffins, that were also very good (I had a tasty and healthy-ish carrot/pecan muffin I ate the next morning).
This restaurant is located at Emerald Bay, just north of the Pueblo Bonito, Emerald Bay. We came here on a day we were exploring the Cerritos coastline on scooters, and had to stop at this fantastic restaurant.
It sits right above a stretch of uncrowded, sandy beach, with stairs leading right down into the sand and waves. There is a casual and fun party-atmosphere, with party lights and many tables set in sand, overlooking the whole stretch of gorgeous north MazĂĄtlan coastline.
The staff is welcoming, and do speak really amazing English. The restaurant is Canadian-owned, and was packed with a few larger family groups and a few couples when we were there.
They maintain a fun and informative social media presence (Instagram @surfsupmazatlan), and have had accurate and good reviews online (see âMazĂĄtlan Today,â and the âHappy Cowâ app).
We missed the live, local music (Saturdays often have reggae, for example), but it looks really great. With a sunset backdrop-what a fun spot to be!
The burgers looked really tasty, large, juicy patties with bacon and cheese. I had a vegetarian crunch wrap. It was in a large hand-made, savory herb-accented tortilla, filled with black beans, cheeses (cheddar, even), tomatoes and greens. The whole thing was pressed on a grill and was delicious. My husband had a chicken quesadilla, which was equally as great. We also had the cream of tomato soup, which was made right there, and it was deeply flavorful with the perfect amount of cream.
The cocktails had the absolute freshest garnish I have seen in all my 3 weeks of traveling in Mexico this holiday season. They were outstanding. My sour apple creation had several absolutely perfect green apple slices as garnish.
Our server, Benjamin, said the chilaquiles are not to be missed and are the best. We learned the talented chef that day was his mom. What an enthusiastic and vibrant group.
I am so glad we ventured north out of town, and made this stop. Totally worth it, especially if youâre craving something super fresh, tasty and literally homemade while maintaining a level of well-executed,...

Read moreMy friends and I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast at Surf's Up while we vacationed in Mazatlan. The staff are quite friendly. I commented to my friends that our server, Benjamin, had a pep in his step and seemed like he really loves his job. We all had huevos rancheros, and wow! It was so good! The tortillas were perfectly crisp, the beans, rice, peppers, avocado, corn, and salsa that were layered in the tortillas were delicious. The egg was perfectly fried. So good! Highly recommend. There were fresh cinnamon rolls that looked and smelled wonderful, but I was so stuffed that I decided not to get one. I'm kind of regretting that decision. The proprietor, Leanne, was friendly and told us they have live music many afternoons...
