Disappointing Experience at a So-Called Fine Dining Restaurant

We visited this restaurant as a family. I’ve been working as a chef in the restaurant industry for over 15 years, and I must say, I haven’t experienced such disappointment in a long time.

First of all, the prices are completely out of proportion with the quality of the food. The place was introduced to us as fine dining, but unfortunately, neither the food, the presentation, nor the service matched that standard.

The dishes were, to put it mildly, underwhelming. The duck, supposedly cooked sous-vide, tasted reheated, with an unpleasant texture and a slightly sour aftertaste — likely due to poor technique or improper storage.

The salad was just a large handful of nuts thrown together with some beetroot, lacking any real balance of flavors. The goat cheese that was supposedly part of the dish turned out to be some bland little balls that didn’t taste like goat cheese at all. This kind of presentation is baffling, especially for a restaurant claiming to offer a high-end experience.

We were also surprised to be charged €2.50 per person for bread. There were four of us, but for some reason, we were only charged for three. It’s not about the money — it’s about the lack of transparency and attention to detail.

What stood out most, unfortunately, was the attitude of the waiter — dismissive and condescending, which left a particularly unpleasant impression. In the hospitality industry, the behavior of the staff plays a crucial role. If a guest leaves not with a smile but with frustration, that’s a failure that no “concept” can justify.

The only positive thing about this place is the view — it’s truly beautiful. But sadly, a nice view alone is not enough to make us want to come back.

I understand that the restaurant is located in a southern country, where standards may vary. Still, even taking that into account, the overall experience was highly disappointing. It’s a shame, because the place might have potential — but in its current state, it’s not fine dining. It’s just a poor...

Absolutely dreadful, DO NOT GO. We were attracted to Betula by the menu which on the face off it reads very well, unfortunately that is not translated into good food.

We ordered a Cucumber Gazpacho, a Shrimp Tartar and a Shrimp soup to start, the waitress made a mistake ( they do not write down the order or check it with you) and I got tuna carpaccio instead of gazpacho despite this the starters were average.

Unfortunately then the mains arrived: 1.Risotto which resembled rice pudding so much cream it was disgusting, tasteless, sent straight back. Grilled squid which had not had the skin removed from the outside and hardly grilled leaving it slimy sent straight back, the chef came out too tell me I knew nothing about the squid they are domestic and the outside skin should not be cleaned!

A tagliatelle with smoked duck which wasn’t too bad on the face off it, 2 of us had quite a bit off it, unfortunately both of us that ate it spent the next 10 hours paying for that mistake vomitting and diarrhoea the night before flying home!!!

Thank you Betula for completely ruining the last night...

Worst restaurant I’ve been to in my entire life. Absolutely ruined my first day of vacation.

2 out of 3 main dishes were inedible. Overcooked spaghetti, all stuck together in a ball and overcooked mussels, which tasted horribly. When asked waiter said it is supposed to be that way. Only spaghetti was excluded from the final bill.

Service was awful. After bringing us food, waiter always ignored us repeatedly until we asked him for specific stuff. Even when asked to bring a plate for bread for example, he would forget and need a reminder 10 minutes later. In the end we asked him why he was serving us so badly, and he started complaining about how tired he is, his working hours and a their new intern who wasn’t helping him (we came at 6 so we were 1 of the 2 customers, clearly they had no time for us).

Place surrounding the restaurant is beautiful though.

So I would recommend to come to this general area for a swim and the view.

But AVOID this place AT ALL COSTS as they will ruin your evening for your own...

We visited Betula twice, on the recommendation of our host. He wasn't wrong - the food is absolutely exquisite and the views are stunning. They say that we eat with our eyes, and the chef creates the most beautiful looking dishes, and the taste matches the appearance. I have just one tiny comment - on both occasions that we visited, some of the menu items were not available - and this wasn't explained, when we were first given the menu - so we didn't always get our first choice. I understand though - that popular and great dishes will sell out - it would just have been good to know, so we knew what we could choose from. The staff are very polite and friendly, the wine list is excellent - I'm just sad that we had eaten so well with our starter and main - we did not have room to try desserts! If we come back, Betula will be top of our list!
