BackYard Bar & Restaurante — Restaurant in Maputo

I was asked by the owner to come to his restaurant and write a review about my experience. I have never been to this restaurant before so it was a good opportunity for me to try a new place.

When we first entered the restaurant we didn’t know if it was seat yourself or if we had to wait to be seated. We walked through the restaurant and I recognized the owner sitting at one of the tables. He said hi to me but didn’t direct us what to do or where to go. We sat ourselves at a table close to the kitchen and waited for the server to greet us. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very relaxing. There were multiple other tables eating and drinking around us. The music was at a nice level coming from a Bluetooth boom box in the middle of the restaurant.

I asked for a Stella Artois and the server informed me that they were out of that beer along with three other beers. I ended up going with a 2M beer on draft. My guest ordered a bottled water. My 2M beer came out first and we had to ask for the bottled water a second time. Throughout the rest of the night I saw many people drinking beer from Stella Artois glasses. This gave the impression that they still had the beer here but they only saved that beer for specific people.

We wanted to try many things on the menu so we ordered the Backyard Burger without bacon, a Hotdog, the Chicken Wings, and a Beef Burrito. All of these were served with a side of french fries.

The food took Almost 40 minutes to be delivered to the table. We had to send the burger back because my guest doesn’t eat pork and the burger came with bacon even after we asked to be served without bacon. The style of the french fries and the seasoning they used we’re both very good. But the fries were not fresh and they were barely over room temperature.

My guest ate the burger. She loved everything about it. The meat was perfectly seasoned the toppings were all fresh and the sauce they used was something she had never had before. This made the burger new and exciting.

The chicken wings are some of the best I’ve had in Maputo. The spicy sweet sauce gave the wings a perfect kick without being too hot. I will come back to this place anytime I want chicken wings in Maputo. I just wish they had more flavor options.

The Hotdog was just like it should be. It was the perfect size with just the right toppings to make it completely enjoyable.

The burrito with something special. I’ve never had anything like this in Maputo before. The perfectly seasoned meat and all of the fillings made the burrito our number one choice for this restaurant.

The restaurant could use a little bit of maintenance and painting. The restaurant walls had a few spots where the paint was chipping. The bathroom was not very nice. The lights didn’t turn on in the bathroom and it had a funny smell. I had to use my phones light to go to the toilet and luckily I already ate before I went to the bathroom. If the owners are OK with customers seeing the bathroom in the building looking like that then it makes me wonder what they are hiding in the kitchen that we cannot see.

The food was very good so I will be returning but I will be make sure to not use the restroom...

A laidback upmarket "barraca" concept. Small structure almost fully built by wood palletes and caniço. Kind of like a "great things come in small packages". The location and area would not attract the upmarket visitor, but their consistent cold bear and lowest prices compared to any place where one can have a sit, a drink and great Mozambican-style burgers cannot be beaten. Their 2M 340ml COLD beers start at 50MTs, followed by their most expensive bottled beer as Budweiser, merely for 80MTs (the average price per item on barracas is 65MTs). Besides, you still get the luxury of a audiovisual system and somewhat sun/rain coverage in the locaiton. Very recommended for a weekday...

Yes. You must go and try it out. The burgers are nothing short from delicious, the chips were awesome although they came in cooled down already, I hate cold chips but somehow these worked and the beer from the tap was cold, crisp and refreshing, complimenting the star of the show on every sip. The vibe is chilled, clean and is a good place for lunch. The food takes some time, so don't go there if you in a hurry. Service was okay and the pricing is good value for money. I also tried the wings of which I was not totally convinced but are a nice addition. They got some other options I'd like to try too...
