An automated reply was the only thing I ever received from Café Bar le Duc — a machine acknowledging me, not a human. After that, complete silence. Only now, weeks later, they surface to claim they ‘couldn’t find’ my email and politely ask what it was about. That’s not service, that’s damage control — and not even convincing damage control at that. If an automated system confirmed receipt, then the message existed. To suggest otherwise is to admit either carelessness or a lack of control over their own communication channels. Neither is a great look for a business that trades on atmosphere and hospitality. And let’s be honest: asking me now what my message was about misses the point entirely. Reviews are not there for businesses to retroactively repair their slip-ups — they are to reflect the customer’s actual experience. My experience was simple: silence, absence, nothing of substance. By the time they stirred themselves to reply, the impression had already hardened. Hospitality is supposed to be about attentiveness. If you can’t manage a basic follow-up to an enquiry, why should anyone expect better once they’re at the bar? A pub can pour a pint, sure, but showing professional courtesy is what separates a neighbourhood spot from just another forgettable address. One star — not for what they’re scrambling to say now, but for what they failed to do when it mattered.
