The "Gouden Leeuw" is situated in a tiny village of about 10 or 15 houses; ||The hotels itself is really beautiful and cosy. They also have a small parking lot. ||Lady at the front desk was very friendly when we arrived. The room was cosy (we only stayed for 1 night) with a beautiful renovated bath room. ||I booked a table in the restaurant of the hotel. First we drank something in the bar. As we checked in we received a coupon for free "Bitterballen". I had to ask the waiter twice if we could order something to drink. He arrived then with a sour face because we interrupted his chat with one of his colleagues. Afterwards he forgot the bitterballen. (no sorry of course.....) ||At dinner the story continued. I had a 4 course menu and my wife a steak. ||I had to wait 2 hours for my and my wifes main course (first there was cold fish and than a soup for me) ||I had to ask the waiter twice for the soup. After two hours we asked the waiter for the main course and said we were there already for 2 hours. He then said to my wife that time would go quicker if she drank wine. (my wife has an alcolhol allergy). Furthermore he said this on a tone that half the restaurant could hear it. ||Finally the main course arrived and guess what : my wife asked a non alcoholic sauce with her steak or simply no sauce (if the non alcolholic would be a problem). The sauce was with Madeira wine and was on the steak. So steak returned to the kitchen. ||to return immediately without sauce......(you can imagine what they did with the steak in the kitchen) .||We were not alone in the restaurant to wait for hours..... People who arrived way after us, got their dishes first and people who where there before us got their dishes after us. ||What we ate was OK and not bad. ||Breakfast next morning was totally OK. ||Normally is should give this hotel 4 points, but due to the impoliteness of that waiter and the total lack of organisation in the restaurant I give it only a 1. ||I had the impression that there was no-one really in charge in the restaurant. (Another waiter talked for over 1/2 hour with the table next to us about wine, while dirty dishes stayed on other...

Read moreWe went back to this hotel because we got married here 20 years ago. To go all the way back we booked the honeymoon suite which was confirmed by email. The hotel is still a beautiful charming place on a special location in the smallest city of the Netherlands. ||Unfortunately we didn’t get the honeymoon suite despite our special request and confirmation. We got another suite which was nice but it spoiled the reason for our return to this hotel. We didn’t get the in the confirmation mentioned sparkling aperitif but we didn’t bother to mention it either. The second room we booked for our daughters wasn’t properly booked by the hotel but they solved that instantly. ||The rooms are cosy but need to be renovated, especially the bathroom. If you pay for a suite, it needs to be good and there aren’t supposed to be holes in the bath or woodwork that desperately needs painting. Because of the old building the rooms are quite noisy. ||We had a lovely dinner and the staff was very friendly. Food was good on a decent level of price vs quality. Different than our experiences 20 years ago but in line with the vision of the current owner to focus on a broader audience with less luxury. ||Definitely a special...
