De Eksterhoeve — Restaurant in Hilvarenbeek

I'm very stingy with my 5-star reviews but De Eksterhoeve would get 6-stars from me, if that were possible. This was, simply, the best family dining experience I have ever had.

We were met at the door by a pleasant lady who invited us to choose our own seat. We decided to sit outside. My daughter is 6 and was delighted to see a play area there where she could kill time before her yummy pancake arrived.

The gent who served was apologetic that he did not have any English menus. So, he painstakingly translated everything on the menu for us. It really seemed like no trouble to him. He was so patient and welcoming.

We were soon eating the best pancakes of all time. They really were delicious. My only regret is that we have to fly home tomorrow and it will be quite a while before we can return.

I would like to thank the gent who served us for his kindness and patience. You don't come across that every day and I'm very happy to recommend this restaurant...

To be honest, this was not the best steak I've ever had. That was Kobe beef, prepared by the head chef of a large cruise ship, during a chef's table dinner in 2011. But this one came very close. Perfectly prepared and with very tasty vegetables on the side. The other dishes in our family were perfect too, and it was all reasonably priced. The playground was nice for the kids. The food was ok. The starter (soup) was served, but we waited for more than an hour for our main course, while other people coming later got their food before us. Kids were already very hungry and impatient. It was really disappointing that we had to complain three times before we got our main course, and didn’t get proper apologies from the restaurant. At least they should have come explain to us what went wrong and why it took...
