Idyllic cafe restaurant situated overlooking the oosterduinse meer/lake (formerly the komo meer), de volière boasts a large and varied outdoor seating area. They have paddle boards you can rent for €5 an hour plus €10 deposit. Very trusting in my opinion. This would not be a sustainable business model in other parts of the world. But for honest people, it’s very generous.

Staff are very friendly and informative - even in a conversation, they quickly make themselves available to you. 5 stars.

It’s mostly a borretje/tapas style restaurant (drinks and hot snacks) but without the Spanish style generosity - true tapas bars will feed you virtually with every drink. But this is the Netherlands - nothing more than a napkin is free here. I propose it’s oriented in this direction largely due to its highly priced and unapproachable menu. While drinks are on the standard side for what you can expect in the Netherlands at an average of €5 per drink, the main menu is not without its garnish of wank lording over the entire selection.

At first glance it looked very reasonable; so much so that there had to be a catch. But we didn’t find this out till we sat down. Things like duck confit (gekonfijte eendenbout) and beef tenderloin (diamanthaas) caught my eye. But were quickly snatched away by the overarching snobbery in which I should order: “we advise to order at least two dishes per person”. Personally I find this very annoying and a little underhanded. On its own, their beef tenderloin was competitively priced at €15. Whereas many places, like the humble brewery cafe I used to cook for, topped the menu at almost €22. Here, you’re guaranteed to spend “at least” €28-30 each if, you presumably, intend to be well fed. And was this credo meant to cover the two-item kid’s menu as well - 7 euros for a selection of deep fried finger foods or 8 euros for a bolognaise? Are the portions so small the kids should exercise their inner “gourmet” as well!?

I came across this same approach at Tolhuis cafe in Amsterdam’s north and found it to also be off putting. I felt deceived. While I could appreciate the humour and self aware wit in voltière’s full text, it wasn’t enough to solicit my commitment to ordering. We left shortly thereafter without having sampled but a whiff of their apparent culinary prowess. The idea of duck with !grapefruit! also helped us steal away.

I’m all for a fancy meal. But mostly when I’m not lured in with a deceiving menu and can openly choose it. I would argue there’s no place for this kind of menu at a family arena with kids and recreational activities.

It was a shame. This place is nice and friendly but is geared toward people who are either fiscally irresponsible or can afford to be cavalier with something as ordinary as a Thursday night dinner. It is not for the average rough and tumble family or penny pinching band of students. Upper middle class and up.

Outstanding experience! Probably the best dinner I ever had in the Netherlands. The location is simply awesome, located right at the lake with stunning views and lovely decorated. The huge sunny terrace is a plus! Inside very cozy and well thought interior! Staff was very nice and did their very best for the perfect dining experience. The food was EXCELLENT. We orders a couple of different dishes and shared (that’s what the clever concept is all about) and loved every single bite. The meat was high quality and just right on point! Even the fries was extra good. I can highly recommend stoping by at this place for either breakfast, coffee or dinner. Will come back for sure and will recommend to friends and family! Nice place. Someone made great work on design of restaurant, menu, website - top notch. It was crowded which could be expected on sunny Saturday. Reservation helped to secure the table for six. Staff as usual Dutch staff - helpful but not an inch beyond. Food from the menu supposed to be sophisticated and different from usual local sate and burger with frites. However in two meals we didn’t like the bread - pita was undercooked and bun was hard. Salads are fine. Meats were also good - pulled pork juicy and tasty, Korean burger not to complain. In general good eatery pretending to be more than that.
