Absolutely excellent place that changes (part of) the menu every season.
We started with chicken for an appetiser, which was good. Not 'wow' - this is not an American barbecue bar - but genuinely good; nicely crispy, tasty both inside and outside, and served with a perfect chili sauce that adds a nice spiciness without taking over the chicken's flavour by making it too spicy.
But then. The aubergine steak was >fantastic<. Aubergine is a vegetable that can easily overpower a dish, but it was balanced perfectly against all the many flavours (carrot, mustard caviar, dukkah, miso), and each and every flavour added something unique to the aubergine steak. I enjoyed the aubergine steak (thoroughly!) equally without any of these other flavours, as well as with any, or any combination of, these other flavours, which is a rare and skillful effect. Brilliant dish, my compliments.
The dorade fish (fish of the season) was also absolutely delicious. Personally, I don't like hummus, but the hummus was not intricately involved in the preparation of the dish and thus could be served on the side. A good choice, because I >loved< the flavour of the whole ensemble, and though I get that the hummus' earthy flavour would act as a counterbalance to the juicy 'summery' (?) flavour of the dish, I definitely prefer it without that. Like the aubergine steak, every ingredient involved here worked to create a delicious whole. I can be very critical about fish - meat is usually fine to good, fish is usually bland or mediocre, but a great fish leaves a stronger impression than a great meat - this was a great fish, again my compliments.
I only tasted a small part of the 'diamanthaas' (Jewish fillet or terrace major, in English, according to Google?), and the meat was cooked very well - even the side piece was juicy and full of flavour.
The desserts were surprisingly good! A delicious brownie, a very nice part-sweet part-refreshing thing with fruit in it, and a white lemon-esque thing that grew on me the more I ate it (it was a bit hard to cut, though). Special mention to the brownie; you'd think 'well, it's chocolate', but it was probably the best brownie I've ever eaten (and I've eaten them warm, fresh, vegan, in various situations and styles).
The fries were fine, though they could have been better - more crispy, less soft, slightly more flavourful? - and they were served with an interesting piccalilli mayonnaise.
Also, I believe ordering a carafe water is free of charge, which is as it should be, but sadly very uncommon in the Netherlands.
All in all, would most definitely recommend, definitely a step up from your ordinary Dutch restaurant.
