Flamingo Paradise — Restaurant in Wassenaar

I‘m from The Hague and I find that compared to many other restaurants in the city, the Indonesian food here is average at best. Portions are large, though, but so is the price. Furthermore, the acoustic is terrible in this glass pavilion, so you can’t follow the conversation with the person sitting opposite of you, which is a bit of an issue when out for dinner on a date, with friends or business partners. Staff seems disinterested or even arrogant; made us feel like intruders in stead of guests. We had to ask and wait for everything although it wasn’t a busy night. When leaving, we had to find the coat closet and take out our stuff, without anyone even asking or saying goodbye. One of the waiters was quite nice, though, to be fair. The location is far out and basically only reachable by car, unless one lives in Wassenaar. All in all not motivating to go back; there’s far better around, in my opinion. Two stars nevertheless as I reserve 1 star for places that have severe defects like...

We love Indonesian food (and have Indonesian heritage). They accommodated us at short notice for our table of 7. The menu is a little confusing... the Nasi Goreng seems to be the best value as it comes with a selection of 6 different “tastes” which includes the glorious Beef Rendang. This dish is a must-order.

The kroepoek (prawn crackers) were great and the satay was to die for!! The chicken and pork were crispy and flame grilled, yet soft on the inside with the incredible satay sauce pleasing everyone! The 'rijsttafel' that was served up was of mediocre quality and clearly overcooked. The several dining halls had too many tables in them, creating a cramped environment and making the acoustics so unfavourable that one could actually only have a more or less serious conversation with the one sitting right next to you or right across from you.
