Well… From where to start…

I had come here before, have had an amazing time and the food was very good.

So, I wanted to come back and have made a reservation two weeks in advance for a table for 6 (I brought my parents in law and my parents to also experience the place, as I had enjoyed so much before). The young lady (waiter) had no clue we had a reservation…

We were put in a table of 5 that was afterwards made for six… The question I asked myself: If I told two weeks in advance I was making a reservation for 6, why was this table not prepared in advance?

After everyone was at the table, we have ordered a bottle of wine and two beers to start… The waiter left two bottles of beer in the center of the table together with the bottle of wine. The wine was unopened and was never tasted or approved by anyone at the table. So, I opened and had to serve myself the wine to me and my guests.

The 6 paper menus were put in the center of the table, never handed to anyone. Well… I never experience that before, in any other restaurant, but ok…

We had 3 non Dutch speakers at the table, and we asked for English menus. But, we were informed they did not have it. Well, I do understand not having English menus, but could the waiter at least make an effort to explain the menu to the non Dutch speakers? Well, yes, but she could not care less and just walked away.

After explaining the menu more or less to my guests we have finally decided to order. For my surprise, the waiter refused to speak English as well…

I do understand that it is not her obligation to speak, but considering 99,99% of the people in the Netherlands speak English, I would expect she could at least try, or ask someone that could speak.

Again, it was extremely embarrassing and rude, considering my guests were trying to speak English to her, that was also not their first language, but she kept speaking and replying in Dutch to them…

Just making clear, no one is obligated to speak English, but there are basic words as “Water” and “Yes” or “No” that are just common sense and effortless to speak.

We had as starter two tunas, and two Vitello Tonato … Completely different from the first experience. Complete average dishes. And, the salad in my dish was not fresh, and the lettuce had a weird smell…

In case there is curiosity to know the reason of only having 4 starters ordered. Well… Two people did not order because could not understand properly and have confidence with the Dutch menu and the first approach of the waiter.

Main dishes:

We have ordered two pastas, one Salmon and 3 dishes with meat.

Again, no one was impressed. By the way, we were never asked how we would like to have our meat cooked.

Deserts… I will just skip, because I will just repeat myself… By the way, my lava cake was burned and tasteless…

Unfortunately for me was the second and last time. The whole experience was ruined and I just left with a lot of frustration, don’t recommend or will bring...

Afgelopen zaterdag gingen wij lunchen bij De Lepelaar. Bij aankomst viel het meteen op dat we de enige gasten waren in het restaurant, zowel bij binnenkomst als gedurende de hele lunch. Dat gaf ons alle rust om te genieten, maar benadrukte helaas ook een aantal punten die beter konden.

De eerste indruk was ronduit slordig: vieze tafels, glazen met lipafdrukken van de avond ervoor, en waterglazen die zichtbaar niet schoon waren én echt heel veel vliegen, ze vlogen overal. Niet wat je verwacht bij een zaak met ambities.

De jonge ober die ons bediende was uiterst vriendelijk en deed zichtbaar zijn best, maar was overduidelijk nog niet ingewerkt. Hij stond helemaal in z'n eentje. Hij was zenuwachtig, alles ging erg langzaam en het tempo van de service liet te wensen over. Op zich geen ramp voor een zaterdagmiddag, maar het haalde wel de vaart uit de ervaring.

Het concept werd keurig uitgelegd en we kregen voldoende tijd om te kiezen. We vroegen naar open wijnen, maar er bleek vrijwel niets open te staan, op een viognier na die helaas niet helemaal bij onze smaak paste. We kozen wat bites en vroegen om een glas frisse witte wijn, dit duurde te lang, hierdoor hadden wij de gerechten al op en hebben we de witte wijn overgeslagen. Jammer, want juist bij dat soort gerechten doet een goede wijn zoveel.

Voor het hoofdgerecht wilden we graag rood, wat gelukkig mogelijk was, een Bourgogne die ook per glas beschikbaar was. Tot onze verrassing kwam de ober echter even later terug met de mededeling dat hij een fout had gemaakt en we toch de hele fles moesten afnemen. Begrijpelijk dat zoiets gebeurt, maar als je zelf aangeeft dat het restaurant ’s avonds vol zit, kun je die fles dan prima later uitschenken. Toch namen we hem maar af, op vriendelijk doch dringend verzoek.

Over het eten zelf: de bites waren veelbelovend. De oesters en brioche met eendenlever waren erg lekker. De brioche met paling was echter met de eendenleversaus op het bord geserveerd, wat de smaken geen goed deed. De kaviaarbites waren royaal belegd, maar de rösti was te lang gebakken en dreef in de olie, zonde van die mooie topping.

De hoofdgerechten waren qua smaak dik in orde. Toch viel het op dat er op dezelfde kaart ook een kipspies met satesaus en broodjes carpaccio stonden. Begrijpelijk als je wat laagdrempeligers wilt aanbieden, maar het past totaal niet bij de rest van het menu. Deze items verdienen eerder een aparte lunchkaart dan een plek tussen zulke verfijnde gerechten.

De desserts maakten alles weer goed, die waren echt top.

Al met al zie ik zeker potentie in De Lepelaar en zou ik graag nog eens terugkomen. Wel zou ik adviseren om onervaren personeel in te werken binnen een team, tijdens drukke momenten. Deze lunch was daar helaas geen geschikt oefenmoment voor het kwam het totaalplaatje...

I recently visited this restaurant and I must say I was very impressed. The food was simply delicious - I enjoyed the variety of flavors and the careful presentation. Additionally, the quality of the ingredients used was evident, and it was clear that they had been chosen with care and attention. I also appreciated the choice of sought-after products that the restaurant offers, which makes the experience even more interesting. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a high-quality...
