The Glen — Restaurant in Ōrākei

Our experience at Meadow Glendowie was aggressively mediocre. When we arrived, there were plenty of tables. We went in, got a space, had water and menus delivered, and then were promptly ignored.

No matter; I went in to order. The waiter was surprised and asked if we had just arrived. I told her no, but it wasn’t a big deal. I ordered and went back to sit. Our food arrived, and we reminded them that we were waiting for coffee.

The food was fine: the poached eggs were a little hard, the bacon was a bit overdone, and the mushrooms were somehow dry. The hollandaise was yum. The hash brown/rosti and chilli jam were also good, but gave strong “prepackaged” vibes. The coffee was the high point (but came with a disposable wooden spoon, when the meal had metal cutlery).

As we were finishing our coffees, one of the waiters came over and said she “needed” the spare chair at our table. Cool, but it would have been more polite to ask rather than make us feel like naughty interlopers - and notably, this was the only time where we felt visible, so it wasn’t great.

Then when I went in to pay, the chair waiter got distracted midway through, didn’t send the direction to the eftpos machine, and wouldn’t make eye contact. Nothing about our meal felt like it was worth $63. Can’t recommend,...

Lovely to return to dine as our daughter and her husband live 5 minutes away and we have been here many times. On this occasion, we booked a First Table so getting 50% off food( only) was a bonus as the food was sadly very disappointing on this occasion. The service was friendly however so helped to make up for the poor quality of food. My pizza was missing olives and had very little tomato sauce as a base and cheese as well. My daughter's eggplant was sadly small and therefore the price seemed too high for the amount ( Musashi, the local Japanese restaurant has a far better eggplant dish for 1/2 the price). We have been here so many times because of the excellent food in the past and reasonable prices but sadly this occasion has made me consider going to the local Japanese...

As the new restaurant on the block we thought we would ‘support local’ .. and we were not disappointed. The location - perfect ! Walking distance for most of us but also ample parking if you drive Wine list - adequate and yummy, well priced cocktails Food - good variety, portions were generous (no complaints) and the quality was good ( with the exception of the fish which was a little dry) Service - excellent ! Our server Thom was friendly, knowledgeable and professional

Only suggestion - the decor was a bit bland. But nothing that some pictures on the walls and some greenery / plants won’t resolve.
