Bought a pad see ew for takeaway.. it did not taste like a pad see ew at all. the noodles were soggy and the flavour was not there at all! It tasted like noodles with soy sauce and nothing else. I had high hopes for this place because of the reviews but this was the worst pad see ew I’ve ever tasted.
EDIT: Yes, this was my first review three years ago in 2022 - it is now 2025 and as you can see, I am a legitimate account with a legitimate name. Honestly, I was so disappointed by this place that I was compelled to make a review because of how bad this was. I still remember it to this day.
Perhaps you continue to have such positive reviews because of your local customer base who do not understand what true Thai food really is, to no fault of their own. It is probably good enough to even have a Thai place near the area.
To improve - the taste of diluted soy sauce was the primary flavour profile - please consider adding more sweetness. The noodles were too soft and over cooked. It is fine that you don’t use authentic fresh rice noodles as many Thai places across New Zealand do not.
Furthermore, I can see by your responses to negative reviews that your attitude continues to be distasteful and highly defensive. Perhaps consider receiving these with a bit more grace - only then can you improve.
I will not be speaking to you privately further as reviews are...
Read moreA few things. The owner (or manager? not sure) was awfully racist while talking to us as he did a stereotypical impression of asian chefs. Little did he know two people in the party were part Chinese and found this deeply offensive. Will never be returning mainly due to this, but also to the incredibly underwhelming meals. I was ordering a vegan meal, as I had done my research and had seen that they can provide vegan food from other reviews, and asked if some vegetarian meals could be made vegan. I was told no to about 4 options, because everything had fish/shrimp paste in it but if I wasn't a "strict" vegan then it's only a little amount in the meal. I was shocked at this remark as veganism is not a diet, it's a lifestyle, and this made me worry about what I may be served. After asking about more options I gave up and asked what I could have. I ended up with some steamed vegetables with some mediocre satay sauce on top. It was the most disappointing meal I have ever had. It is not hard to make good vegan food. My friends, both meat-eaters, were additionally disappointed with their meals, especially for the price of everything. None of us finished our meals. Overall, a racist host and bad expensive meals. Not worth it. I also find it hilariously sad how the owner and manager seem to attack everyone's bad reviews telling them...
Read moreMy first time to visit New Zealand with my Mom and glad we got to dine at Chang Siam in Kerikeri. What absolute gem! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with genuine warmth and hospitality. The ambiance is cozy, clean, and welcoming — perfect for a relaxed dining or a special night out.
The food was phenomenal — full of authentic Thai flavors, perfectly balanced spices, and beautifully presented. Every dish was a standout, and you could truly taste the freshness and care in every bite.
What truly elevated our experience was the incredible service, especially from the manager, Mike. He went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, and it’s clear how much pride he takes in both the food and the customer experience. Along with Mike’s lovely team, the service was personal, attentive, and heartfelt.
If you're in the Bay of Islands and craving authentic Thai cuisine, Chang Siam is a must-visit. Five stars for the food, the atmosphere, and the amazing people behind it. We can’t wait...
