Sorry to put in a poor review, but the cafe didn't put prices on the cabinet food. Even when asked prices, the person serving didn't know - she had to look each item up on the cash register.

Displaying prices is a basic courtesy. It is the customer's only protection against overcharging (whether accidental or deliberate). Think about it...

Customers who are watching their budget are forced to ask the prices for anything they would like to buy - such an inconvenience to everyone, and how rude to embarrass people...

Kissing Gate Cafe is a classic Central Otago feature. Not too be missed. Popular with day trippers from Dunedin, travellers from inner central Otago, and the odd cyclist (or 100) from the rail trail. Closes at 3pm, so get there early. Three very fat cats promise very good food here. We arrived at a few minutes to 3pm, but still got fine coffees (not my tipple) and hot choc, and we certainly didn't feel chased out the door. Lovely atmosphere, and...

Great place for a coffee and a lunch or even afternoon tea , you either sit inside or take opportunity to sit outside in the garden seating area , with friendly and , well mannered staff and a clean tidy cafe , on a lovely day it's a great spot with a child's play area you can ask to take your dog into the garden area 😀 it's only 45 minutes drive from Dunedin, this little cafe is well worth the visit...

I made a detour when driving from Dunedin to Queenstown to visit this country cafe and wasn't disappointed: simple and tasty and in a valley with stunning views and more locals than tourists. Coffee was the smoothest of my 12 day trip around the South Island visiting 24+ cafes – most others seemed to make a point of burning their coffee, so Kissing Gate is worth the drive!

What a treasure located on State Highway 87 in Middlemarch which has a population of under 200. A full cabinet of food and a menu that catered for those that are gluten free. I had a plum friand, still warm out of the oven. The coffee was great. And a toasted sandwich with gluten free bread filled with cheese ham and relish. Generous and delicious!
