📍 Location & Ambience – ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) The inside of Black Cottage Café is beautifully designed, with a warm and cozy feel. The china plate wall decoration adds a unique touch. However, the exterior of the café doesn’t quite reflect the quality inside—it looks a bit messy, which slightly affects the first impression.
🍽️ Food Quality & Taste – ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) The food was above standard—tasty, well-prepared, and visually high-quality. I had a bacon and egg panini wrap, and I appreciated the way they prepared the egg: the white was fried separately and placed on top of the bacon, while the yolk was placed underneath. The cheese was perfectly melted, and the bread quality was good. The coffee was decent—good, but not outstanding.
👨🍳 Service & Staff – ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) The staff are not the most outgoing, but they are responsive and attentive. Each section of the café has its own attending staff, and overall, they did a great job. I worked there for about an hour and a half, and they maintained good service throughout. Free water was provided, and I could see that they were well-organized in their roles.
📜 Menu Variety & Pricing – ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) The menu offers a good selection, and the pricing is reasonable. I spent $18 for a coffee and a bacon and egg panini, which felt fair for the portion and quality.
✨ Cleanliness & Facilities – ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5) The café itself is clean, but the toilets, which are located outside, could definitely be better. By New Zealand standards, they are acceptable, but they could use more attention to cleanliness and maintenance.
🐶 Dog-Friendliness – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) A big plus is that this café is dog-friendly, making it a great choice for pet owners who want to bring their dogs along.
💡 Final Thoughts Black Cottage Café is one of the nicest cafés in the area. If you’re in Coatesville, Riverhead, or Dairy Flat, this is probably your best option. The café has free internet, making it a great spot for catching up with friends, family gatherings, or working remotely. If I’m in Coatesville again, I’ll definitely...
Read morerecently visited Black Cottage cafe for lunch in Coastville Village, Auckland, and let me tell you, appearances can be deceiving. From the outside, it resembles a contemporary cottage by the highway, but once you step inside, you're greeted with a warm and cozy ambiance that instantly makes you feel at home. 🏡❤️
Upon entering, I sought the hostess's recommendation, and she enthusiastically suggested their signature dish, DUCK A L'ORANGE. This delectable creation features a perfectly prepared Confit Duck Leg accompanied by Dauphinoise Potato, Sauteed Green Beans, Candied Orange, and a tantalizing Citrus Jus. 🍗🍊🍽️ To complement my meal, I decided to indulge in a refreshing Hazy IPA, which the hostess highly recommended. 🍺👌
Meanwhile, my wife opted for the Salmon Benedict, a dish that boasted a medley of flavors. It consisted of house-smoked salmon, mustard-parmesan potato rosti, creamed spinach, beetroot puree, and originally, poached eggs. However, she made a delightful twist and changed them to scrambled eggs. 🍣🍳🥔
As for my order, the Duck A L'Orange was a true culinary delight. The combination of the succulent duck and the creamy Dauphinoise potato was simply mouthwatering. The rich and tangy citrus jus elevated the dish to a whole new level, adding a delightful touch to each bite. 😋👌
On the other hand, my wife's order was a burst of flavors. The scrambled eggs, perfectly cooked to a creamy and soft consistency, blended harmoniously with the tantalizing smoked salmon. And let me tell you, the potato rosti served as a remarkable companion to this flavorful ensemble. 🍳🍣🥔
Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend Black Cottage cafe to anyone seeking a remarkable dining experience. While it may be slightly on the pricier side, the quality and taste of the food unquestionably justify it. The impeccable customer service further enhances the overall experience, and due to its popularity, it's advisable to make reservations in advance to secure your spot. 👍📞

Having been introduced to Black Cottage Cafe by my locally living best friends in 2020, I have been here many times since and not once have I ever been let down by the incredible team here.
The ladies who are in their front of house positions are always kind, friendly and understanding if any of my friends in the group that I usually come to this cafe with have any dietary requirements and immediately offer us alternative suggestions. My two best friends and I even hiked five kilometres from their house last year in the boiling January summer heat to just have a taste of the stunning food here at this cafe as none of us had a full drivers license at the time...but now I do!!
That time that we were there, we had the brunch selection. I went for the Black Cottage Breakfast and my best friends had the chicken and avocado salad and the french toast. All three of us devoured our meals, they were stunning and we did not regret that hike whatsoever!
The last time that I came to Black Cottage was for a very early last minute breakfast at 7:30am. My other best friend had told us that she was coming up for a visit as she is currently away studying in the South Island. Despite being the early hours of the morning, we all had a lovely catch up over breakfast and the food did not disappoint. I was able to reserve a table with ease thanks to the help of Eva. I had the gluten free option of the french toast and it was delicious! This same group is returning in a weeks time for another catch up breakfast and we are all so, so excited to be back at this stunning cafe.
Thank you so much Black Cottage! I would give you way more than five stars for your incredible food, service and environment and just for helping me get my friend group together who don’t get to see each other very much as we are all uni students or...
