I was looking forward to having a cafe at Mac Bay again, so made a point of visiting. Had already been warned by a local that the cafe is very noisy whether full or empty, due to lack of sound absorption, so you need to sit outside. Unfortunately found other problems too.
No prices displayed at all - not for beverages, cabinet food or menu food. I don't go back to any cafe that plays the 'no prices displayed' game. Date scone dry, over-browned, verging on burnt on the bottom. Tea was very strong but served without a separate pot of hot water. Tea was made with loose tea in an infuserβ which is good - but somehow there were a lot of leaves in the pot which then poured into the cup. Cutlery was in holder on table with blades/tines/bowls upwards, not handles upwards.
I contacted the cafe directly with my comments, confident that all these issues were due to an inexperienced staff member being in charge that day and to teething problems. After all, how much effort does it take to write the price on the food label? I assumed I'd get a polite reply thanking me for feedback and assuring me they'd take it on board. However, the manager's reply... 'Dont bother coming back to see if "I've made changes" because I wont be'.
I offered the manager the option of reconsidering what may have been an unconsidered response, but she hasn't replied. That says a lot about her attitude.
Several other local contacts have let me know that the courgette patty is "dry, tasteless, too much chickpea flour". The coffee is "fair". The brownie is "good", but then it's hard to ruin a brownie. And there are still no...

Β Β Β Read moreStopped in for brunch on a beaut Sunday morning. Lovely drive around the Otago Peninsula to Duck Cafe. Was quite busy but managed to find a table. Ordered the eggs bene with bacon. Yum! Eggs perfectly cooked and didnβt scrimp on the hollandaise sauce which is always a bonus. Silverbeet stems were a tad tough but the leaves were nicely blanched. Generous with the bacon which had a lovely crispy crunch to the bite. Nice atmosphere - pretty quiet and friendly people in the cafe - staff and diners. Nice outlook over the peninsula. Would def go back when down in Dunedin. There are several parks about 10 metres down from the cafe (outside the dairy) but there are another 20 odd parks about 50 metres further down the road by...
