I saw this on the route from Otira to Christchurch. Since it shows up on Google as World Famous, we had to check it out. Unlike what is mentioned in previous reviews, thankfully the line wasn't very long and they were only out of 3 pies. The ladies manning the counter are all very nice. The shop is small but has several tables. It is more of a place to pick up pies and coffee on your road trip. I got the Sheffield Supreme with steak, bacon, cheese and onions. My friend got the Chicken, Apricot, and Brie pie. The Sheffield Supreme was excellent! I have previously tried the Lamb and Mint, Mince and cheese, and the Chicken, cranberry and Brie cheese pies at different places in South Island. Amongst these, the Sheffield Supreme had the best flaky crust and flavor with the Lamb and Mint from Arrowtown Bakery. My friend enjoyed her Chicken pie but thought that her pie was too heavy due to the cheese. Having previously had the brie based pie, I second that. But, crust wise, it is a great pie. I definitely recommend stopping here if you have a few minutes. It is along the highway and there is tons of parking along the road. If I ever come back to Sheffield or Christchurch, I shall be back!

We stopped by for a late lunch on the way back to Christchurch from the ski fields. I place isn't too hard to find since it is on the main highway, just keep an eye out for all the parked cars in the area. There is quite a bit of street parking on both sides. It wasn't too busy when we arrived so we opted to eat in. They have so many flavours in their pie rack that it was quite hard choosing just one. In hindsight, I probably could have gone for two but I was also interested in trying out their sweet treats in the cabinet beside the pies. I tried both the venison pie as well as the Sheffield supreme and I definitely preferred the supreme. The bacon and onion with the beefy gravy was divine. The cheesecake was ok, as were the shakes. The fruit pie, peach and passionfruit, was surprisingly tasty since the passionfruit flavour wasn't overwhelming. It was definitely a great pit stop since the pies were really tasty. The only sad part was that we had to leave the snow early since they do close at 1600 but it was kinda worth it.

Summary 3.5/5: good pie, reasonable price. The location 5/5: if you are driving past State Highway 73, there is no reason not to stop by for a pie here. About 5 parkings available in front, otherwise, park by the main road. The food 3.5/5: We had their signature pie Sheffield Supreme and Venison Herbs, each cost $7.50. The pastry was ok, although not so flakey. The beef in Sheffield Supreme was a bit tough and dry. The Venison Herbs Pie was moist but the herb flavor is not noticeable. Wish there's more meat inside. The atmosphere & service 4/5: Busy but good vibes. There's very limited tables in the shop, most will have to take away or eat outside. The staff is patience with the customers taking time to understand the menu, which is good. Suggestions: To have the menu available online, put a QR with the menu. so when customers queue-ing for their turn to order, they can scan the QR for the menu and study the menu upfront.

It's one of those "oh you have to stop at bla bla bla on your way to X Y Z" sort of places. World famous in NZ kind of place. A blink and you'll miss it in a tiny NZ town kind of place. This is a review based on two visits. Mince/cheese, Steak/cheese, Smoked brisket, Pepper Steak pies were tried.

Cons: There is just too much filling. I mean, the filling to pastry ratio is perfect, but the filling just never ends. The filling is lava hot and you could seriously hurt yourself if you don't blow on the pie. They use some sort of voodoo because it is unbelievable how much flavor is packed into each pie. Too many bumbling tourists that don't do their research and take forever in line. Staff have an almost sheep dog mentality of getting the slow pokes through the line...maybe not a con.

Pros: You won't leave hungry. Pies are piping hot. The pies are absolutely delicious. Quality ingredients. Staff know how to move the line along on a busy day. Free tomato sauce on the tables (whaaaat?) Indoor/Outdoor seating. AND they have sweet treats and coffee if you're into those sorts of things.

I live in Christchurch and I'm often looking at what kind of adventures will take me through Sheffield...

We had a really unpleasant encounter with the coffee lady but the main counter lady and food was really good. In fact my mom said the scone she had was one of the best ever! Re the coffee, my mom ordered/paid for an XL and got a small so asked to please get what she ordered and in short the girl said, that's not what came through I can't help you, and ignored. so my mom had to really awkwardly grab the busy counter lady and she told the coffee lady it was her mistake and please redo it. Eventually we got the XL cup but the coffee lady had perhaps taken us wanting what we paid for personally and just tipped the small cup into the large cup. Feeling extremely uncomfortable at this point knowing we would have to confront her again when asked to fill it up she said, do it yourself! so my mom had to awkwardly walk literally behind the counter and fill it up at the hot water tap herself. Such a shame because it was the start of our mothers day weekend away and I was excited to show my mom the famous Sheffield pie shop but it ended up putting a real sour and negative start...
