It's one of those "oh you have to stop at bla bla bla on your way to X Y Z" sort of places. World famous in NZ kind of place. A blink and you'll miss it in a tiny NZ town kind of place. This is a review based on two visits. Mince/cheese, Steak/cheese, Smoked brisket, Pepper Steak pies were tried.
Cons: There is just too much filling. I mean, the filling to pastry ratio is perfect, but the filling just never ends. The filling is lava hot and you could seriously hurt yourself if you don't blow on the pie. They use some sort of voodoo because it is unbelievable how much flavor is packed into each pie. Too many bumbling tourists that don't do their research and take forever in line. Staff have an almost sheep dog mentality of getting the slow pokes through the line...maybe not a con.
Pros: You won't leave hungry. Pies are piping hot. The pies are absolutely delicious. Quality ingredients. Staff know how to move the line along on a busy day. Free tomato sauce on the tables (whaaaat?) Indoor/Outdoor seating. AND they have sweet treats and coffee if you're into those sorts of things.

Read moreI saw this on the route from Otira to Christchurch. Since it shows up on Google as World Famous, we had to check it out. Unlike what is mentioned in previous reviews, thankfully the line wasn't very long and they were only out of 3 pies. The ladies manning the counter are all very nice. The shop is small but has several tables. It is more of a place to pick up pies and coffee on your road trip.
I got the Sheffield Supreme with steak, bacon, cheese and onions. My friend got the Chicken, Apricot, and Brie pie. The Sheffield Supreme was excellent! I have previously tried the Lamb and Mint, Mince and cheese, and the Chicken, cranberry and Brie cheese pies at different places in South Island. Amongst these, the Sheffield Supreme had the best flaky crust and flavor with the Lamb and Mint from Arrowtown Bakery. My friend enjoyed her Chicken pie but thought that her pie was too heavy due to the cheese. Having previously had the brie based pie, I second that. But, crust wise, it is a great pie.
I definitely recommend stopping here if you have a few minutes. It is along the highway and there is tons of parking along the road. If I ever come back to Sheffield or Christchurch, I...
Read moreWe had a really unpleasant encounter with the coffee lady but the main counter lady and food was really good. In fact my mom said the scone she had was one of the best ever! Re the coffee, my mom ordered/paid for an XL and got a small so asked to please get what she ordered and in short the girl said, that's not what came through I can't help you, and ignored. so my mom had to really awkwardly grab the busy counter lady and she told the coffee lady it was her mistake and please redo it. Eventually we got the XL cup but the coffee lady had perhaps taken us wanting what we paid for personally and just tipped the small cup into the large cup. Feeling extremely uncomfortable at this point knowing we would have to confront her again when asked to fill it up she said, do it yourself! so my mom had to awkwardly walk literally behind the counter and fill it up at the hot water tap herself. Such a shame because it was the start of our mothers day weekend away and I was excited to show my mom the famous Sheffield pie shop but it ended up putting a real sour and negative start...
