The service was friendly and fast. The carrot cake was beautiful, very dense and full of nuts, fruit, coconut and carrot, the cream cheese icing needed more whipping as it was gritty; but the flavour was beautiful- a bit heavy for my liking. The mince and cheese pie was ho-hum. The pastry was marginally too thick, a decent amount of cheese inside but you couldn't really taste the mince as it was over powered by the cheese flavour. They also had cheese on the pastry lid which was overkill. I understand it's probably there for marking, but a pastry C would be better. The coffee was ok, not bad, not memorable but sufficient - it did the job. The Southern Man breakfast was lovely - wish I'd had that instead. The surroundings are in an old school house I think. Table and chairs outside next to a paddock of live stock.. really calming environment and inside was a decent selection of local crafters works, which are available to buy. I purchased some Tui Earrings to help support the local community.

Really enjoyed out visit here today! We just pulled in after a mini bus tour group - so we were asked to wait for 15 minutes to order. This was totally fine, we happily checked out the gardens of this former school house, posed for photos in the the stocks, and looked at the souvenirs. There are 2 toilets in the back section. There are local books/magazines to read, and some toys for the kids to play with. The food was lovely, grabbed the beef nachos, and a serve of hot chips to share. Yum! Happy with our choices, i think price was about $28 nzd. Tap water was alos available. There were also burgers, pies, soup, fish and chips on the menu. There were some scones and some baked good also. Friendly place to visit, would happily return.

The perfect place to eat on a drive through the Catlins! Great food, huge portions, an wonderful restaurant philosophy, and an absolutely beautiful space. There's a garden out back, and even picnic tables in the yard so you can enjoy an outdoor meal if the weather is nice enough! My husband and I agreed that the mocha we had here were the best of our multi-week trip around the South Island. The fish & chips was tasty, and huge - we could easily have split one order! They also have a nice little gift shop area with things that you probably haven't seen a million times elsewhere. Highly recommended!

We camped overnight at Owaka on the Catlins Scenic Route and when we found nothing open for breakfast we decided to press on. How glad we were about that decision when we came across the Niagara Falls Café, literally in the middle of nowhere. Set in an old school house, this place is delightful. The staff were super friendly (and our waiter entertained with some singing) and the rustic menu was delicious from my wife’s Eggs Benedict to my choice of the Southern Man Breakfast (very hearty). Beautiful setting overlooking the old school yard to the sheep paddocks. Make sure you stop here if you’re in the neighbourhood for an experience...
