Star Tavern — Restaurant in West Coast

We were staying at "Hole in The Rock "studio, Cape Foulwind, for 3 nights mid February and were put off by some not very glowing reviews of this place but decided since it was a beautiful day and we couldn't be bothered driving back to Westport on our last night, we thought we would try Star Tavern. Now I wished we had dined there more than just the once as it is a fabulous place with great garden setting and the food is fabulous, not only well priced but also very generous in portion size. The waitress was so friendly and thoughtful. I commented that it was a shame that the tavern had had some damning reviews which are obviously incorrect as I would highly recommend this place. 1 handle of wayfarer, 1 beer glass of coke(from a 2lt coke bottle) $17. I get the "out of the way places", it will cost more......... Ordered 2 rib eye, 1 with garlic butter the other with no sauces( said to the girl twice) as the mushroom sauce was an extra $6. Pass. Mine came out with pepper sauce. It went back. Stopped in today on the way back from Greymouth, we found a very inviting owner, very friendly staff, the pub had a great atmosphere so we stayed for lunch of spring rolls, Tarakihi and chips and beef burger and chips, all were excellent, the spring rolls fresh and crispy with a tasty plum sauce dip, the fish was thick and cooked to perfection and the burger was succulent and juicy , both served with crispy salad and nicely cooked chips.
