A restaurant you want to come back to. We ordered the whale carpaccio tender, melting in the mouth. The taste was delicate, slightly salty, with no overpowering spices. The salmon was cooked perfectly soft, juicy, served with vegetables: carrots, potatoes, and onions. Everything was fresh, lightly sautéed, with a gentle creamy sauce. The chicken pasta in cream sauce was aromatic, homemade-style, rich but not heavy. The focaccia was warm, herb-scented, crispy on the edges. Overall great experience! The food was great, service was attentive by the waiter but I gave 3 stars for service because of the bartender/manager/owner? who practically dismissed me when I walked in.

He was too busy conversing with a lady at the bar and attempted to seat me but then turned around and called the waiter to do it. The dining room was empty except for 2 tables. He walked by multiple times after I had been done with my dessert to attend to 2 tables next to me but clearly ignored clearing my plate or checking in on me.

The food and cocktails at Makalaus were both fantastic, and their back of house has a great handle on making and presenting dishes. Perhaps an off night as they were setting up for a large reservation and had a difficult patron, but service and atmosphere were both off. With only three tables it was frustrating to spend so much time waiting for both our order and our check, and while I appreciated the sentiment of getting our orders in before their large party was to arrive 30 minutes later, it made us feel rushed and unwelcome.
