My recent visit to Mumtaz Mahal Restaurant in Muscat was deeply disappointing and has left me with significant concerns regarding the quality of service and food.
Service Experience
Upon arrival, we were greeted and seated by the staff. As our group was large, with 7 adults and 6 children (aged 4 to 7 years), we anticipated that managing such a group could be challenging. However, the way the restaurant staff handled our group was far from satisfactory.
Mixed Grill Platter Incident:
When placing our initial order, we decided on a Mixed Grill Platter. To our surprise, the waiter suggested that this dish might be "too expensive" for us and recommended other items. This suggestion felt condescending and left us wondering why the waiter would assume that we couldn't afford the platter. We are well aware of the pricing in such establishments and found this assumption offensive. Customers should never be made to feel that their financial capability is being judged.
Food Quality
The food we received was of very poor quality. We ordered garlic naan and parotta, mutton, chicken, prawns, etc. but what was served to us was overcooked and nearly inedible. We promptly informed the waiter of the issue, but the response was underwhelming, with no significant effort made to correct the situation.
Children's Behavior:
Our children were playing at the table and occasionally moving around the restaurant, as children of their age naturally do. Suddenly, a waiter approached us, stating that other guests were complaining about our children and that we needed to settle our bill and leave. This was shocking, as there was no prior communication or attempt to address the issue in a more respectful manner. It begs the question, why does the restaurant allow families with children if they are not prepared to accommodate their needs?
Management & Staffing Issues
To address our concerns about the poor food quality, we requested to speak with the chef. The chef candidly informed us that the restaurant management had reduced kitchen staff, resulting in limited manpower and compromised service quality. This was an alarming admission, suggesting that the restaurant may be cutting corners at the expense of the customer experience.
Overall Experience
Our overall experience at Mumtaz Mahal Restaurant was one of the worst we’ve had in Muscat. The combination of poor service, low-quality food, and an unwelcoming atmosphere made the visit extremely unpleasant. As a result, we left the restaurant feeling disrespected and disappointed. This experience has left us questioning whether Mumtaz Mahal is a suitable place for families or anyone expecting a high standard of dining.
Final Thoughts: For a restaurant with such a reputation, the experience was incredibly subpar. If the management does not address these issues promptly, I fear that many more customers will walk away as dissatisfied as we did. I would strongly advise potential diners to reconsider their choice if they are looking for a pleasant and family-friendly dining experience.

Read moreOur first anniversary at Mumtaz Mahal turned out to be a disappointing experience. Despite its reputation for exquisite North Indian cuisine, the service fell short of expectations. The food, while okay, did not meet the high standards associated with Mumtaz Mahal. Despite being a renowned 5-star establishment, the service was lacking.
Our disappointment began with the indifferent attitude of the waiter, who seemed uninterested in our inquiries about the menu. The hygiene aspect was also concerning, as the glasses provided had an unpleasant smell despite being changed twice. Opting for bottled water seemed like a safer choice.
To add to our dismay, when requesting a finger bowl, we were presented with a dirty bowl, a surprising lapse in cleanliness for a restaurant of such prominence. This experience left us questioning the management's commitment to maintaining their reputation.
As patrons who had visited Mumtaz Mahal before, we expected a different level of service. It's disheartening when a well-established restaurant seems to overlook such essential aspects. Hopefully, this feedback reaches the management, urging them to address these issues and uphold the standard they...
