Great alternative lodging if coming from Salkantay/Hydroelectrica and you want to completely avoid Aguas Calientes (recommended). The staff are very helpful, the beds are clean and warm, toilets are clean, the water gets hot, the meals are tasty with vegetarian options, there is a good view of the river, and not many crowds. It is only a 25 minute walk from the lodge to the base of the trail to Machu Picchu, and the Gardens of Mandor are right across the train tracks and is a pleasant walk even if you've been hiking all week. It is interesting to put a name to all of the plants one sees out here, plus there is swimming allowed by the waterfall at the end...
Read moreWe stopped here on our way to and from the viewpoint in the gardens. We had a beautiful banana muffin with coffee on our way into the gardens. We then did the easy walk to the waterfall and then the slightly longer, steeper and more difficult walk to the viewpoint. The view to Macchu Picchu is amazing. When we finished the walk we returned to the restaurant for a beautiful burger and sat in the river garden watching the hummingbirds.
