SMО̄HK — Restaurant in Romblon

We were lucky enough to be both customers and volunteers at Smohk for a couple weeks, so i think i can provide a full picture of this place.

First part of the review is for the food. The menu at Smohk is rather simple, but this is a guarantee of the freshness of the ingredients. They only serve USA beef from quality suppliers, for both steaks and burgers. Easily the best beef i've had in the Philippines, and probably amongst the best i've had in my life - the burger is unreal. Aside from the beef game, they are excellent cooks all around. They can provide different food if told beforehand, and they propose alternative menus on requests and special occasions. If you get the chance to try Carlos' smoked chicken, dont even dare not take it. You never had chicken like this, guaranteed. Plus, they can provide alternatives for vegetarians (without sacrificing flavour). Salads are available with fresh ingredients out of the local market and home-made dressings. Cold beers and good music are always there. Oh, all of this is at competitive prices too. (I also feel like they have a pretty good Ragù alla Bolognese recipe directly from Italy - look out for that...).

Now, the people. As mentioned, we were lucky enough to work with Carlos and Mei for a bit, and they are incredibly kind people. So welcoming, and so good at creating a pleasant vibe with all the customers and volunteers. They can help with all your needs on Romblon at low cost. Plus, Smohk is actually more than a restaurant, consider it like a meeting point for both expats and tourists, where you can have the best burger of your trip or simply a couple beers while meeting new people. Your best bet to quickly have best suggestions you could on how to get around the Island - and make some friends, of course. We will miss Romblon deeply, and Smōhk with it. Until...

Having stumbled across this restaurant with my beautiful wife, Elisha, and our children, Rupert and Sadie Jay, we quickly realised our stumbling had caused us to find an absolute gem in Romblon!

Having been travelling for over half a year now we can quite comfortably say that not only the food that Carlos and Mei served us was the best we’ve had whilst being away from the U.K. but the dining experience as a whole made it not only the best food, but the best meals we’ve had too!

It’s not just about the food, it’s about the atmosphere, the company, the service, the list goes on and Smohk had all of these things in bucketfuls to make our dining experience unforgettable! We had more evenings at Smohk than I can count and with good reason! Nothing was ever too much of an effort for Carlos and Mei, they really went the extra mile for us, not only letting us dine in their adorable restaurant but also giving us tips for exploring Romblon too!

Mei served us steak with mashed potatoes and beans. It was one of the best steaks i‘ve ever had in my life. She was very kind and asked everyone how many grams the steak should have. The mashed potatoes and beans were just as good! The other day Mei made a bbq at the beach for us with chicken and fresh fish which was outstanding as well. She brought the food and drinks so we had to worry about nothing. She is a very nice host and always makes sure that everyone is happy. You really feel that she is passionate about what she does!
