I had some time to kill before my tasting at Wine & Soul Vineyard, so I wandered into a small café called Nicola. The moment I stepped inside, I could feel the authenticity. A few generations of the same family were gathered around one table, laughing and talking as if the café itself were part of their home.
I asked if they served food, and Paula, the owner, smiled and said yes. Her daughter, who spoke English, helped translate, and within minutes her mother—the grandmother—was in the kitchen preparing a simple but unforgettable steak dish for my father and me. It was the kind of meal that reminds you what food once was before it became complicated—honest, generous, made with pride.
The café is small and unpretentious, filled with the kind of history that seeps into the walls over decades.
