Located in a residential area about 20 to 30 minutes from the center of Aveiro, Batista do Bacalhau is a hidden gem that draws not just locals but also those in the know who are willing to venture beyond the usual tourist spots. This restaurant, renowned for its dedication to traditional Portuguese cuisine, particularly bacalhau (codfish), has even garnered recognition from the Norwegian Embassy—a testament to its authenticity and quality.

The star of the menu is undoubtedly the “Bacalhau à Batista,” a generous portion of codfish grilled to perfection over an open flame. This dish is served with classic “batata ao murro” (smashed potatoes) and is priced at 30 euros, a portion large enough to satisfy two, or even three, diners. The bacalhau is moist, flavorful, and one of the best you’ll find in Portugal.

While waiting for the main course, try the “pataniscas”—crispy codfish fritters that pair wonderfully with a glass of the house wine. The wine list here, though not extensive, is carefully curated to complement the robust flavors of the dishes.

Service at Batista do Bacalhau is another highlight. The staff are not only attentive but also extroverted, contributing to a warm and lively dining experience. They are more than willing to guide you through the menu and make recommendations if you’re unsure.

However, be prepared to wait, especially during peak hours. The restaurant’s popularity means there’s often a line, so it’s wise to arrive early or be patient for a table.

Though not centrally located, Batista do Bacalhau is well worth the trip for anyone in search of an authentic Portuguese dining experience. This is not a tourist trap but a beloved local spot where the quality of food speaks for itself. For anyone visiting Aveiro, a meal...

We have been coming to Batista for several years during our multiple trips to Portugal every year. We live in the United States. A reservation was made for 6 people, my cousin was visiting Portugal from Boston. I mentioned to the service manager our desire for my cousins to have a great experience at Batista, similar to what we’ve experienced over the years!

The quality of the Cod is the best, grilled to perfection always!!! You will enjoy your Cod I guarantee you! However, the service was the worst we experienced and expected!!! Literally waited 10 minutes to get waiters attention and he kept ignoring us.

We know this is August, service goes down just about everywhere in Portugal as August accounts for busiest month.

Besides unexpectedly bad service, the portions were not equitable as what other tables were served! This was true of several tables we saw around us.

The service manager brought us another portion of Cod which I refused several times. My comments were aimed at improving this great restaurant, unfortunately my experience was awful with service, rushed, brushed off — this takes away the 5 stars I would give Batista.

In closing, Batista in August may need to be avoided or reconsider a different place, I certainly will do that going forward!

Found this place just looking through the maps of the area trying to find a local restaurant. At first as we walked up I was sceptical as it was so indiscernible as a restaurant except for the people coming in and out for take out. Once we walked in there was a full restaurant awaiting us. The waiter was fantastic and I myself was quite excited to eat at a place that specializes in cod fish (bacalhau). Well I can say it did not disappoint, the cod and smash potatoes were amazing and the wine selection was fantastic. We had a great meal at a restaurant that I’d recommend to anyone that enjoys a good meal. The one thing I’ll also highly recommend is the Natas to Ceu congeladas. Anyone that’s had this as it’s normally presented and is a fan will absolutely love the ice cream version of it. So please, treat yourself to a local gem of...

One of the best cod I've ever eaten. It's all about the way they cook it. Try the "migas" with the main course and "ovas de bacalhoa" and "pataniscas" for appetizers. Very good choice of wines. And for dessert try "natas do céu com ovos moles". Delicious. Highly recommended.
