Paraíso do Coto — Restaurant in Caldas da Rainha

A few days ago, we had lunch here. As usual, we opted for the set menu, which includes everything in the price. However, when we received the bill, it was very high. We went to inquire, and the owner kept arguing and lying to us. First, they said that these set menus were only for employees and not for tourists. When we pointed out that this was not true, as we have been coming to Portugal for over 30 years and had never heard this before, they changed their story and said it was our fault for not mentioning it. Then, they claimed it was because the waitress didn’t speak English, but we had ordered in Portuguese. In the end, they had no choice but to reduce the bill from 88 euros to 62 euros. The owner of this restaurant is trying to scam people! In over 30 years in Portugal, I have never experienced anything like this! I was very angry and disappointed! If you don’t know Portugal well or don’t speak the language, definitely stay...

We’ve come for a meal tonight wondering if our favourite restaurant is open again and it’s the first meal out since the lockdown. The tables are socially distanced without table cloths for ease of cleaning. Greeted at the entrance by friendly staff wearing masks. Hand gel available on entry. Bread is individually wrapped and the service and quality was lovely. So glad we’ve returned and feel safe dining here. Thank you for a great treat. We will return....

We visited in between lunch an dinner time, but were lucky that there was some other big group so the kitchen was open and we could get some meals. The staff was extremely helpful and tried their best, despite being semi-closed. Meals were excelent and prices make them great value for money. This seems like restaurant targeting local people, not turist crowds, so they care about repeat business and set quality of cooking and prices...
